    Default Game Recommendation

With Christmas coming up I'm looking for a game that I can dig into while everyone is enjoying time with their families. It's usually something on PC, but I've browsed Steam and haven't found anything that tickles my fancy.

I'm usually looking for something sandboxy that will let me mess around with different strategies. To give you an idea of what I've played, my past Christmas Day gaming sessions have been:
    XCom2
    Civilization V and VI
    Prison Architect

Games don't have to limited to management-type games. I'm mostly looking for something with a deep solo player mode. I'm not a multiplayer kind of guy.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands? It's pretty open and will take up some time. I looked at my stats this morning, I have 550 hours into it apparently.

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

Factorio (aka cracktorio). Easy to put a 1000 hours into it and that's just vanilla before you try any of the million mods.

Rimworld is pretty badass too if you enjoyed prison architect.

Any of the old school strat games might be fun like C&C, AoE etc.

Oxygen Not Included. I think its finally out in full release?

The early access was so good I took a vacation day off to play it for 24 hours straight back in 2017. Haven't been pulled in by a game that hard since then.

Oldy but a goody is FTL (faster than light). Also addictive as all hell.

    Civ V again...

I'm currently sucked back into it while my in-laws are staying for the holidays. (office is the only room without a chair for them to invade).

I never get tired of winning by playing Saudi Arabia, only having one city, getting mega rich, and buying off the city-states into a UN Vote victory.

Really enjoyed playing Frostpunk. Quite challenging but really well made.

Bought Jurasic Park Evolution on Steam for 15$.

You guys are getting games to play while family is at your house? And how does that go over with the wife/GF?

    Literally high fived my tablet.

Yeah, shes fine with it. My in-laws visit Calgary 2-3 months of the year. It would be different if they were only here 1-2 weeks. I might actually enjoy their company if that was the case.

If you want a punishing turn based RNG that has a good chance of giving you nightmares - Darkest Dungeon is worth a shot.

Seriously though, 3D gore never had me scared - and yet this 2D sprite game did.

I'd suggest Path of Exile. The fact that it's completely free to play and substantial new content is added every 3 months is astonishing to me. They listen to their player base as well and it's one of the most polished games I've ever played.

It's basicaly like Diablo, but instead of being a horrible game from a horrible company, it does everything right with exponentially more playability and zero "grind". I've been playing it for the last 1.5 years or so and still does not get old Very easy to hop on, hop off too, no commitment.

As for the strategy component, there are almost unlimited viable ways to build and optimize. Single player is amazing, and you have the option to completely be "solo self found" so you never play with anyone else and you can't trade, if you wish. Good story, and an unlimited amount of stuff to do, yet all very easy to understand. Honestly one of the best games I've ever played. The only purchases you can make are purely cosmetic or quality of life (i.e. additional stash tabs) - they are cheap, and they do not push them at all.
