    Default Favourite winter hikes

Normally go cross country skiing a few times each winter, but sometimes the snow sucks. Anyone have some favourite winter hikes? Can be near the city or out in the mountains. Would love to hear some ideas.

Chester lake is a classic, not too long and not too strenuous. Good views and beautiful on a bluebird day

    Chester Lake
Rummel lake (way quieter then Chester)
    Rummel Ridge (bring snowshoes)
    Burstall Pass
    Black Prince/Warspite Cirque
    Troll Falls
Johnson Canyon to go see the ice climbers
Grotto Canyon to go see ice climbers
Evan Thomas Creek super cool canyon+ ice climbers
    Rawson Lake (short but sweet)

We did Black Prince/Warspite Cirque this summer with the kids. I assume with spikes it would be decent in winter. Pretty shady, so would need to dress warm, but hey why not.

Some of those have avalanche danger in the winter depending on snow pack conditions and your location. Black Prince and Rummel definitely would have possible avalanche danger especially depending on where you end up on those hikes if the trails are buried/hard to find. I'd be really careful hiking in the mountains in the winter things can quickly go from fun day out to having to dig people out. Preferably try to stick to stuff that's flat on the valley floor and that does not bring you next to any drainages.

Did Warspite lake, and man it was cold today! - 21 at the parking lot in the morning, and that trail doesn't get any sun at this time of year. Mostly stayed on the gentle interpretive loop. That's well clear of any avalanche danger and well packed. Did a short side excursion up the trail to the cascade and next lakes, but it wasn't well packed, and I got tired of post holing so we didn't venture far.

Might reccomend this trail for later in the season when you might get some sun. But we still had fun.

Quite the terrain though, especially in winter
