    Default 3-D printed wheel

3-D printed wheel - this thing is just nuts. Just a concept right now although they've demonstrated they can build the components - I'd have one just for living room art...

Wasn’t there an old formula for unsprung weight savings? Something like $500/lb?

I think it went something like that. As for real world TireRack and GRM have done extensive testing on this.

For all but the craziest machines, saving weight in the rims is one of the last places to look. On a road course and auto-x, the 30-40lbs saved added up to not even a tenth in time savings, but at substantial cost.

One area this could possibly revolutionize is offroad. In order to get the necessary durability, offroad rims are notoriously heavy. 3d printed rims may allow for unique designs that keep the strength, while lowering the weight.

Would be cool if they could design a “hollow” wheel that was super light but wouldn’t pack mud into itself. Would look like shit but would be super functional I bet.

It’s only 2-3x when comparing rotational vs static weight. It increases with larger diameter wheels and with the weight away from the hub.
