I've seen 14+ but my own uneducated opinion is that anything 10+ is worth watching for

How does that chart work? Higher the "dbz" the larger the hail?

Also how quickly do the seeding planes reduce the size of hail? I would have thought they needed to get to them well in advance but apparently not.

No, as far as I know the dbz is the "density" if the cloud, so how much moisture is in it. The "tops" are how tall the clouds, so how much energy, which loosely correlates to the potential hail size.

Surprised we didn't get any hits on this thread last saturday afternoon/night we had a pretty big storm go through the SW had a seeding plane on it and still dropped toonie sized hail all over the place.

Ditto, was working in Airdrie and while there certainly was a lot of noise and some lightning it really was a non-event
    Will fuck off, again.

Didn’t even get rain tonight in the NW. Even last few storms, barely any hail. When there was hail, was tiny enough where there’s no damage. Been lucky up here this year, hope I didn’t jinx it.

Haven’t had a drop here either. Might even have to water the lawn here...

Saw some lightning driving home after work but that’s the extent of the theatrics.

its still way too early for the big storms, not enough convection around yet. get through July and we'll talk!

Um, the storms yesterday were pretty large and way up in the stratosphere. These were big. Some great circular motion high up - definitely supercell material.

I'm so glad winter is over so we can get to hail season. And then we get some fire season before winter again.

    Calgary weather is truly horrific.

I actually prefer the variety here. The Wet coast is much worse in the summer for boring, hot, stale weather for weeks, which then gets compounded with fires. Places like Ontario are even MORE hot and muggy - but they get wicked storms too.

Here, we can have a 10c drop in temps after a storm passed through and cools things down.

When its smoky, I just stay more indoors and install a good furnace filter and set the fan to recirc.

Of course - but we have peasant AC - 2 hose, floor units ..... lol (to completely AC our double-furnace house would be >10k)

I guess it depends where you are comparing to. Calgary winters are much better than Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto. Rarely cold for long, and lots of sun.

I think Calgary has a nice mix of weather.

Aren’t the majority of damage inducing storms here in july and August? Yes it had a lot of rain but not really any hail of consequence

Typically, yes. But this was also being seeded - like so many. Where the hail stop solution fails is when there are MULTIPLE systems inbound and they are focusing on one already (as is the case in July/Aug).

Having geeked out on weather radar for decades, its obvious to see the storms they are seeding as the rain intensity drops down noticeably as compared to nearby storms continue their course.
