And Telus has already responded with a 15gig 75$ plan in response to Rogers.

Competition is definitely good. Can't believe those CRTC monopolists had the nerve to tell us all that competition would fuck us.

Bell normally always matches Telus deals. So imagine we will be hearing something soon.

Roger's has 3 tiers of unlimited plans. All other carriers will need to respond to these offers. Should be an interesting few days.

When the $75 plan came out almost 2 years ago the malls had crazy line ups everywhere. Curious how this will play out with the new plans.

All these companies are doing is jacking up their plan prices 10-15% and calling it a good deal because it has more/unlimited data.

Isn't it that the data doesn't actually cost the carriers much, rather it's the infrastructure?

So basically if you exceed your data, it is basically useless
Freedom works the same. Anything graphical is basically dead. But Google Maps and email works ok.

Infrastructure costs exist because of increased data usage. Yes it’s true once built data is close to free but that’s like saying water shouldn’t cost anything because it’s the infrastructure costs that exist not the water itself.

I've been with Rogers for over 10 years now. A couple years ago they gave me a 'special' deal - 10Gigs data with the usual call/text package for $125 per month while the balance of my phone is paid down.

Last night, I did some research about their new infinite plans and decided to switch to that. 10Gigs data at full speed with my call/text package I have now for $110 per month until November at which point my phone balance is gone and I can then get the $75 plan. (Includes Roam-Like-Home)

As has already been pointed out, the throttled speed is 256kbps...... lol, only in Canada folks, only in Canada would you see something so stupid. Sure, you're not paying any overage fees but that speed is a joke. Is that even close to 3G speed?

Anyway, I'm happy to be saving a little bit of money.

Honestly if you manage to hit your 10gigs early in the month. Just spend the extra 15 bucks to add 3 more gigs for the month.

The “unlimited” thing is just marketing.

Sorry I should've been more specific. Yes it's an out of province plan. I paid this guy $100 bucks (one time fee) to get my wife and me the plan. It's been 2 years and still going good. He'll even port your number for you.

how are people still able to complain over these plans.... this boggles the mind.

There are a lot of options now for people in Alberta that didnt have a good enough plan as it was... cant say I see a negative in these plans.

It's surprising they're even allowed to advertise that as unlimited when the throttled speed is so slow such that it would be completely unusable by any reasonable standard anyway.

Me too, but an advantage is that you will never get overage fees lol. But koodo has a program where they just cut the data once you have reached your limit.

Yes Shock free data. Which is pretty nice to have so you don't go over your limit.

Good point. Though I think most companies now have warnings they send that you have to actively dismiss to get into paid overage territory, Fido does for sure.

Thread titles will need to bring back the '256k beware' in the title if they are pic heavy

On a similar note, does 3G even carry data anymore? Before, when it was a current standard, it worked for browsing, etc. albeit somewhat slowly. Now, when any phone drops to 3G, it seems to completely cut off the data service - I've noticed this both at home and while travelling with various devices. Did all the 3G bandwidth get absorbed by 4G or something?
