Yeah, if you like to pay for your phone monthly as part of your bill, Public is not an option.
Yes that convo has been beaten to death. Definitely cheaper to take the free phone if you want to upgrade every 2 years, but to each their own. Just info sharing is all, since it is the cell phone plan discussion thread.

Public? @ExtraSlow what I have to have is service everywhere, that is paramount.
I'd say go with Koodo (I have a referral to be transparent). But honestly man, it's the same reception you're already used to. So I'd stick with Bell/Telus/Koodo as they really do have the best coverage.

Telus did the same shit to me, even after I tried to compare a plan from Koodo (their sister company). They still didn't budge so fuck Telus.

No personally but know many that have. Its the old Manitoba shuffle. You can do it yourself but going through the guy is MUCH easier.

I'm just playing devil's advocate but am I correct in that people bitched about being charged for overages and not being notified or that notifications were going to their kids' phones and not them, and are now bitching about TELUS taking $50 before they offer data blocking?

+1 for Public mobile again. No dumb overages or goofy messing around. Just decent plans on the Telus network. They do charge extra for LTE which pisses me off but alas.

You can get unlimited talk+text+2GB of LTE for $45. (its actually 6GB over 90 days)
I don't see any other carrier beating that price and you can get the price down to $42 with a referral and auto-pay.

I thought it was Saskatchewan, since they're the ones with cheap cell service?

They closed the sask loop hole so now you have to go through MB.

For the overages, just set the limits on your phone. It might not be 100% accurate, but at least you won't risk being charged $50 in overages even after notifications. The alternative is that you can just turn off your mobile data after you get the 90% or 100% notification.

Am I the only person in the world who keeps a semblance of an eye on my data usage each month? More so back when I was on 1GB plans but still. Reset the counter around billing cycle. Check once a week. Not rocket science.

Same thing I did a million years ago when I only had 1000 texts a month or whatever.

Yep, no need for setting anything, and zero chance of an overage.

Data is so cheap now most people don't have to watch it. 6-10GB (full speed LTE) plans with all the other usual "must haves" for $60-70 are very common. Unless you're watching HD Youtube/Netflix often or streaming tons of music, you don't even have to think about it.

Back in the day when you might only have a 1-2GB plan then yeah you need to watch it if you do anything more than internet browsing, but not anymore. The bill cycle counter has reset automatically for years, I don't remember ever doing that manually - maybe before smartphones were commonplace.

I'm not sure it's worth the stigma of having a Manitoba area code.

You dont. You sign up with a MB line and plan, then port your 403/587 number over. Thats the loop hole

Found a real drawback to Public Mobile. If you need to change plans BEFORE your 30-day rollover date, you basically double-pay for the days until your previous rollover.
My plan was supposed to roll over August 12th, but I needed a feature that wasn't inlcuded in my old plan. So I upgraded to a more expensive plan today, for full price.

Now it's not a lot of money, my previous plan was $40/30 days, so I'm losing about $15 worth of the old plan, but still, it's annoying.

Job has me calling the USA several times a week, for long periods (call today was 34 minutes) so I needed the unlimited Canada and USA calling obviously. Also going to be in the US for a few days every month, so some US data is good. Now have this $60 plan.

My wife has been handling the cell phone bills but I recently got my hands on one and am fucking pissed what we are paying for 3 phones on our Rogers plan as we are paying $250 (somehow over the last four months they added a $20 1.5 Gb data add on we don't even need) for a family plan and aren't even subsidizing phones. Who is giving out the best deals these days?

That’s the cheapest month to month reliable plan I could find for our oldest. Before that, I was on a data only plan ($15/5gb, $10/gb overage), but his dad was on blackberry and would kill us on overages from phone calls and text messages. $60, $70 overages like it’s nothing. $1/text and $1/min comes fast. Had to upgrade to this plan just for his dad.

If you can get away with data only, it’s currently $15/4gb and $10/gb overage. Just switch to the 5gb when the promotion comes out. Nothing came close to beating that.
