My only concern is the potential for increase in garbage however people drink anyways so maybe I am off base with that assumption. The question about "would you pay more for a picnic site that allowed this" (paraphrased) pissed me off. Why would you charge a fee for something that doesn't cost you anything to do? I get the city of Calgary is always out to get a buck and love taxing fun but fuck off with that nonsense.

I suspect so they can hire enforcement to make sure you don't walk to the playground or to the washroom with a beer
The city could offset the lost revenue from tickets for drinking in parks by selling liquor licenses to beer cart vendors that could cruise the parks. This would help with the Side Gigs thread too
Same, this was what I put under "concerns":This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Littering, but the same people who litter beverage containers would litter other picnic trash anyway, liquor or not.

I think a buddy and I brought a cooler filled with ice and 30 beers 3 years ago. Climb up was brutal though
That's exactly why lol, fuckin calves are on fire just bringing up a couple beers and sandwiches, I'm no hiker.
I don't think so, the laws around being intoxicated in a park will not change, that will remain an offense. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Current laws don't reduce the number of "urban campers" who are hammered in the parks right now.

The problem with Calgary is that its a low brow city and not civilized, sophisticated or mature enough for this to work. Over time this would be abused and ruined for the rest of the public just watch. You are going to have hoards of white trash, rig pig types, and dumb teens who will take this to the extreme. Oh yeah, don't forget the prairie puritans who will oppose this due to devil's juice involved.

Parks are already the preferred drinking places for the homeless - go to any park downtown and that is the only people using them, which is also the reason why no 'regular' people use them. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

If people could get to drink in parks, why can't I smoke? In before 'second hand high' nonsense.

Teens drinking in a park? Now I've heard everything.and dumb teens who will take this to the extreme.
To me anyway, drinking doesn't typically affect those around you. If it does, it's probably someone being loud or annoying rather than physically affecting you. With smoke (and I am mostly talking about cigarette smoke), it has a huge effect on everyone around you - it stinks even 50-100ft away, it makes your clothes stink, it's objectively bad for you, etc. So at least from that point of view I can see why. With weed / vaping it's more of a grey area I guess, but it still extends well beyond your personal space even if you're using responsibly, in a way that drinking typically doesn't. I can see how they're viewed differently is all I am saying, I don't necessarily know what the best approach is.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
