To me anyway, drinking doesn't typically affect those around you. If it does, it's probably someone being loud or annoying rather than physically affecting you. With smoke (and I am mostly talking about cigarette smoke), it has a huge effect on everyone around you - it stinks even 50-100ft away, it makes your clothes stink, it's objectively bad for you, etc. So at least from that point of view I can see why. With weed / vaping it's more of a grey area I guess, but it still extends well beyond your personal space even if you're using responsibly, in a way that drinking typically doesn't. I can see how they're viewed differently is all I am saying, I don't necessarily know what the best approach is.
True, but smell in this case isn't the issue as most areas of a park, people are able to smoke cigarettes unless otherwise posted. I have friends and family who smoke cigarettes, they at least have the courtesy to step away from the picnic table or shelter, but still are able to smoke in those areas. So when people vote against even having designated areas at parks to smoke weed, it's more about the stigma and exposing it to children or people who are anti-weed. At least that's what I think and it's ridiculous.

I've been drinking in parks since I was a kid. More responsibly now, making it legal won't change any behaviour but at least normal adults don't feel guilty about the occasional beer with their burger

The only difference this law will make is cops around the core no longer can bust drunk Indigenous or hobos in parks if they have a sandwich with them?

How often was the no drinking law are even enforced in parks?

^Nothing will change there, it only applies to drinking at a registered picnic site. If you are drinking anywhere else or intoxicated at the registered picnic site you're still committing an offense, all the sandwiches in the world can't save you then.

Who wants to bet that if implemented the city will screw this up like they do with almost everything? I could see them issue temp drinking in park licenses to carry on the tradition and culture of nickle and diming Calgarians through added unnecessary Nenshi bureaucracy.

I've never had problems drinking in a park, I actually thought it was already legal if you reserved a picnic site. I figure if your not with a group of loud ignorant drinkers, nobody will bother you.

Yea same thing happened with weed. People (idiots) had this moronic image that Calgary would be engulfed in a constant haze of weed smoke, people would be driving high left right and centre. Kids would be exposed constantly to drugs......literally none of that happened, at least any more so than before.

Conservative people are dumb (I don’t mean left vs right I mean people opposed to change in general), the change occurs and they quickly realize the massive amounts of energy they put into opposing something, dreaming up worst case scenarios ad nauseam, was all a complete waste....

Who is actually going to take the time to book a spot to sit in a park and have a drink? This is just dumb.

Will the government do the right thing and let Indigenous people drink in the park before everyone else?

I have previously booked picnic spots at the park. Good for birthday parties and family reunions etc. But the bookable spots are a tiny fraction of the parks, and most families just picnic on the grass. Whatever, I'll continue to drink or not drink at the park as I always have.
