A 4k Netflix setup (with tolerance and overhead) will pull about 25mbs. so 3 TVs going would be 75mbs.

Unless you're downloading things 24/7 - 600mbs is in no way necessary for the average person - esp as the costs just keep rising.

That IS their whole marketing scheme - get the unaware users hooked on something completely over the top and then slowly raise the temperature of the water. Thats corporate 101.

I download ISO's, Windows updates, Steam files and other large files and my 100mbs service (dual WAN through TS) is perfect.

Just because the 100 plan works for you doesn't mean anything more is unnecessary for the average person.

Throw a couple Nest cameras + a Nest Hello and more than 2/3 of your upstream bandwidth is used up 24/7 (1 Nest Cam IQ uses 4Mbps). Throw on a Netflix 4K stream and the Nest cams will start uploading potato footage to Nest.

$54 for 75Mbps doesn't seem like that good of a deal when 660Mbps / unlimited bandwidth is ~$80/mo. If you never use it though I guess it's still better to save the money.
    With shaw?

    Or which provider?

Yup Shaw. It's the deal pretty much everyone has now to my knowledge. Anyone willing to sign for 2 years (or renew for 2 years) was able to get that price. Broadband 300 was automatically upgraded to BB600 (really 660) if you were an existing customer as well.

Value wise that isn't great compared to their other plans (pay a tiny bit more, get about 9 times the speed), but if you have no use for faster internet, you are still saving money compared to $80/mo for 24 months so there isn't anything wrong with that.

I'd call and complain... You're better off with Teksavvy at that point since you'd be paying 50$ per month with no contract for the exact same speed.

Shaw IMHO is just not worth dealing with as a customer since they keep playing this whole dog and pony show where your rates keep getting jacked up year to year for 0 added value. It gets old real fast having to call in every few months threatening to quit in order to get them to drop rates to a reasonable price. Easier just to move to a provider who has consistently low prices. Shaw is like your internet service provider acting like a car dealership where everyone is getting different rates and different special deals meanwhile everyone is getting screwed in the left ear.

They definitely make you work for it.
But recently it seems like both Shaw and Telus have moved into giving discounts for 2 whole years which is amazing.
You don't have to call in every 2 months because 1 of the 10 discounts they applied is expired.

Cost is irrelevant for me, I prefer to have the speed when I want/need it - I'll be grabbing the 750/750 Telus or faster when I'm back in Calgary, as I want the upload speed for a household member with a YT channel she ups videos to couple/few times per day. I understand what you're saying for average PC/net users, but that's not me. I had a dedicated T1 line in my home when I ran a large website in the late 90s/2000s and that cost was astronomical compared to a hundred and twenty bucks for what Shaw/Telus are offering now. It may not bother you to wait for d/l at 100mbit/sec, but with faster options for not much $, I won't.

Nobody "needs" faster than 100mbit/s, I know what you're getting at, but nobody needs more than 100 h.p. either, or more than 200 sq/ft per person, or 30 rounds instead of 5. It's not a matter of need, it's a matter of want IMO at this point, so again, your point isn't wrong necessarily, but isn't always correct either.

Yeah resellers are 50 a month for 75mbit without bs promos you have to keep jumping on.

I just noticed lightspeed is advertising 600 down and 50 up for 80$. It’s quite interesting because Shaw is only giving people 20 upload on their 600 packages.

Well the fine print most likely says up to 50 with disclaimers but will you ever see that?
    Will fuck off, again.

My price went down and my speed doubled I thought that was pretty great. I've never had to fight them or threaten to quit in 10+ years. Every single time the deal has either come to me, or been one simple phone call or visit to their DT location.

I worked for them and once I was off the employee pricing I couldn't leave fast enough. It's a clock work occurance rate increases every year around April. You pay more and get less.

Up to 15 Mbps† download speed
Up to 1.5 Mbps† upload speed
    150 GB/month data transfer
    Regular Rate $82/MO
Now that's some good old fashioned Shaw "value". If that isn't screwing you in the left ear then I have a bridge to nowhere to sell you...

That deal is indeed horrible, but I imagine the only people paying that aren't doing any due diligence whatsoever and are not taking advantage of regular promos.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the upgrade in Calgary over the last few days bumped up minimum speeds to 25/5 (or maybe more like 25/2.5)

25/2.5 was moved to legacy "Sorry, service not available" for ordering a while ago. I can imagine in 2+ years they may make 50mbit legacy as well.

What are modem/router costs with Teksavvy? I can only get Shaw at my place, and I'm over 'em.

Iirc mine was 80$, I think the highest speed 300+ plans require a better modem that’s like 120
