Default Sunshine ski resort owner gets unfair offer he can't refuse from feds

    Coles notes:
    - Parks Canada is annexing Sunshine Village and gave them one of two options — agree to a 42-year lease with an agreement to then give Sunshine Village Ski Resort to the Crown for $1, or sever and remove every facility and return the land to its natural state.
    - Failure to respond to them by January 21st would have resulted in them taking the park for free and seeking new operators via public consultation.

I'm having mad max fantasies where sunshine builds an army and then secedes, fights off the canadian armed forces, and becomes its own soverign micro nation.

So now the clock's ticking. Do you think the resort will start to deteriorate right away, or closer to the 42 year deadline? We all know what a shithole Race City became in its final years.

The rules aren't shocking if you're familiar with how a national park lease works, but yeah, have to expect the place isn't going to see many improvements now.

I have a hard time trusting a Scurfield's messaging though. Does anyone know if these lawsuits ever got resolved? http://skicanadamag.com/mountain-for...of-litigation/

Boo-frickety-hoo sunshine (and why is an Opinion piece being put as Local News?), welcome to operating on Parks Land
They've played the woe-is-me for so long, and yet still charging $114 for a day pass?

Have you ever skied in the States? It's like $150+ USD per day at Breckenridge/Vail for a pre-purchased ticket. At the window is $190+, so $114 CAD isn't so bad once you start looking around other resorts.

You mean, an article written by the Government media outlet to make the Government look much better.

Still, Sunshine forgets that they get to operate at the grace of Parks, and by having site guidelines in place. 42 years is a long time to make a lot of money..

It's like people forget what a Lease is. You don't get to keep it indefinitely or sell it back to the owner at the end for profit. Any upgrades you do are for your own benefit while you're there. Any upgrades at Sunshine are to encourage further use and more revenue, they can decide how they want to move forward with that... Really, how much does Sunshine pay Parks for their lease? Something tells me it's likely pennies for how much they make..

It's funny to read the 'cole notes' at the top, when a) how do you annex something you already own and b) its the Park's park, not Sunshines.

which is ridiculous considering you're still skiing the Rockies. I'm unfortunately going there in Feb.

As an occasional skier, it's very expensive. $100+ for lift ticket and $100+ for equipment rentals + gas. Even with an 8 hour day on the hill you can only get so many runs in when you factor in giant lineups at the lifts, time spent on the lifts, lunch, etc. that I find it's hard to make it worth it. I do really enjoy it and still do it occasionally, but I couldn't imagine paying $200 USD + rental. There aren't many other common activities I can think of where a day of fun is that expensive. A family of 4-5 and you're already looking at way over $1000 for a few hours' fun

If you’re getting a 42-year lease, why would you continue to improve a facility that you’re eventually going to give to the federal government with no compensation? As the saying goes, renters don’t fix the roof.
What a dumb article and a dumb comparison.

This person is renting with the INTENT OF TURNING A PROFIT. Of course the renters will upgrade where necessary for the next 1/2 century, in order to keep business going. Kick the can down the road.

This is not a 10 year plan, its 42 fucking years - after which, anything is possible. Perhaps we will be skiing on Mars by then.

42 years is a long time and all kinds of stupid things can happen in the meantime. I don't think this is anything to get ruffled about.

The world is ending in 12 years because of climate change anyway so why worry past that.
