This Mayor sounds like an absolute joke.
Without these projects and camps running in his region Ft Mac would literally be nothing.
He’s doing a great job of driving people and his golden goose away.
    He is exacerbating the problem

Does he really think putting that many workers in Fort Mac would be a net positive? The community isn’t setup to support that many additional residents...even if they may only be temporary.

He probably wants to prop up the real estate market and then sell and leave. There is probably a few Fort Mac residents thinking of doing the same thing.

Camp workers are getting a horrible, horrible deal here.

But how does this effect the intersection of gender and identity?

I think someone really needs to play the safety card here. If your goal is to bring that many workers into Ft. Mac just think of the exponential increase in traffic of that already horrifying and busy highway from town up to site. By having the camps close to the worksite you take vehicles off the road on a regular commuting basis and thus increase safety. I don't even think that idiot could argue with that point.

Also, from that article increasing the fees resulting in a $1,500-$101,000 is absolutely insane. Especially when they are already paying $3.2M in property tax. I get that the mayor is trying to volley for his city but you don't do that by making enemies with the industry that support your whole entire economy.

What a disgustingly ignorant comment. Yes Don, it appears that a few people really have no grasp at all on what is happening in the region. Namely YOU!

He's not even volleying for his city. Anyone with half a brain would realize your population suddenly increasing by 50% is going to create havoc. If this actually goes through, I suspect a reversal within a year.

The worst of it is, you don't even need a crystal ball or any reasonable foresight to understand this. Don Scott literally lived in Fort Mac when it was a transient shithole full of havoc before work camps came along.

Wasn’t it not so long ago that Ft Macmurray was complaining about all the people moving to the city and that they couldn’t keep up with growth and how it was driving home prices out of affordability for residents?

    Aka A bunch of whiners

Not gonna lie I love watching this type of drama unfold from the sidelines. Glad it doesn't affect me, but its unfortunate that one idiot can cause emotional trauma for thousands of workers though.

^ Not only the workers. This affects whole families... spouses, kids. Hell even the family pet! Lol ok maybe that's a stretch but seriously, the whole thing is ridiculous. This proposed bylaw goes after two things you don't mess with in Alberta, peoples livelihoods and their families.

On the plus side, there would be a bunch of really pissed off people move into the RMWB that can then vote this asshole out.

It's stunningly stupid for a Mayor, of all people, to think that sharply increasing your city's population by 10% is a good idea and a manageable one at that (if we use the one example of ~6,000 occupants). Simple things like sewage and drinking water would certainly would be strained, not to mention where to house that many people suddenly.

The guy must be thinking they'll build community halls in town and run like them emergency homeless shelters.

Reality is he hasn't thought or care to think of those things.

This is designed for one thing. To artificially inflate real estate prices again due to the amount of people in Ft Mac under water on their mortgages.

    Mostly certainly.

I have to wonder if they (The town of Fort Mac) are still dealing with insurance claims, or have been out-rightly denied, and now seeking any avenues for income to rebuild/recover.

I'm sure there is people still waiting on insurance claims. But the underwater comment is just due to real estate prices. The fire hasn't been the main driver for those prices, it's been the sharp decline in demand for housing because of remote work sites going to FIFO. People were still buying up 1300sqft houses for 700k+ before FIFO became so prevalent.

When you read that it might make a person have some sympathy for the people underwater. But you need to also realize that housing still is not "cheap" in Fort Mac. It is now just a bit high, instead of retardedly over inflated.

    We won!!!! We won!!!!

RMWB rejects work camp moratorium in 5-5 split vote. The issue will no doubt come up again with Scott at the helm tho.

Anyway, news that many people will be glad to hear.

Great to hear!! Hopefully some of these shelved projects get back on the table now and they start hiring again. I saw a picture of a shit pile of coated pipe being transported through Calgary on it's way to BC apparently. Rumors of announcements on Transmountain coming shortly.
