Heated bed - it's much more fiddly not having one... Stable temperatures is one of the biggest keys to consistency. Couple degrees of air temp can make drastic differences.

Go with the ender, it's a few $ more but better local support. Some of the more universal parts are available local, but the creality line you can buy every quite literally every part in town - with a couple options too.

Anyone want to school me on 3D printers?

Is a heated bed required? What is a good size for average printing?

    What parts usually breakdown?

Thinking about ordering an Ender 3. People also seem to suggest monoprice printers.

I have nothing I want to make in particular, but saw this today and got me interested.

Wow, you can actually print stuff that's strong enough to make tools?

Yeah man. 3D printers don't just print sissy toys.

3d printed Nylon is shocking strong ... like you'd actually be amazed how hard it is to break.

I bet, overall, it costs more to print that BB tool that if he bought a Park Tool version when you factor in the cost of the printer. He said it cost him about $1.50 CAD to print.

I'm interested because of the fact that I could print a tool that I am only going to use once for cheap. It will also be fun and interesting. I find that I end up throwing things away because some tab broke or the like. It will be cool to print a replacement to get more life out of "stuff."

I doubt that costs $1.50. Maybe $0.50? Weigh it.

I had the Ender for a short while and didn't like it as much as the people online. There is a massive support group where people help you out. The first thing you do with the printer is to print upgraded parts for the printer itself. You can also buy a new board to boost the speed, but it's a bit of a hassle.

I'm assuming that's a commercial, consumer grade, hobbyist printer? If so, that's pretty impressive in both the strength and the precision to print the little teeth to fit the notches in the bottom bracket.

Yeah no doubt, but I'm actually surprised that's how much it cost him in material to print the tool. I would have guessed that would have cost him almost the same amount as buying an actual BB tool. I guess I've overestimated how much that material costs.

I considered getting a 3D printer for the same things too. It would be nice to print up miscellaneous parts of things that break instead of throwing them out, but it seems overkill for that cause I wouldn't be using it for much else.

How much does a spool of that material cost and how much of it would it take to make something that size?

About $35 for 1kg of PLA or enough for 10 to 15 dildos to give you a frame of reference. Assuming that part takes about 10 grams and a bit of wastage, 45 minutes of power...maybe $0.45? You can print in ABS too for more or less the same price, but it's toxic.

The time consuming part is designing it. There are usually some designs on thingiverse for free.

I was being generous with the exchange rate.

“ Adam a few measurements, and then roughed it out in CAD, checked with a rough print (10mins) then added a handle. £0.45 worth of material and about 20 mins modelling and an hour and a half printing total.”

I have a friend looking to do a production run of small 3D printed parts, he’s an eye doctor and i’m guessing it’s related. If anyone is interested, can you pm me your website, email or contact info so I can put him in touch with you. Thanks

I can help if it's not for profit and if it can be handled on my printer. I will also need her bio, website, etc to determine if she is going to steal ExtraSlow's identity. Otherwise, AndyL is the guy.

How much is the going rate to get stuff printed? What would a golf putter run me? Should I just buy a used one to do 2-3 3D prints instead?

Typically the guys battling over the little projects go 5x material costs. So about 120-200$/kg in the usual pla or petg.

Some of the higher end stuff - setup charges alone can dwarf that.

But you'll learn pretty quick its a bit more involved than hitting print I wouldn't expect a printed golf club would survive very long.

I usually charge 1-2$/hr or more depending on what it is. If you give me a hundred of something to print, 1$/hr is pretty easy money or if its a smaller run maybe 2$/hr. If it looks iffy whether itll print (fragile / weird overhangs / sharp angles) then usually a bit more just incase the print fails but for the most part anything is just click and print with no care and its fine. I think its been 6+ months since I've had a failed print. Petg + powder coated PEI sheet pretty much holds anything solid.

But I won't do leg work, don't have time to do modelling or edit models or design something, not worth it at all.

Nope leave it alone and run it stock until you've learned the basics.

Same mentality as the guys who insist you need a tuner and wheels/tires on your new car.

What filament should I buy for the first print. It seems that printing the boat is the way to test?
