We have access to 3d printers here at work and I've been sending in random stuff to get printed (watch strap holder, automatic timer clips, headphone hinges, etc). Printing is free, but there's always a queue of at least a week before my job even gets started.

I can cut the line if I do the self-serve option and bring my own filament and set everything up myself. Do you guys have any recommendations on good value filaments? I'm not saying the cheapest, but best bang for the buck.

What kind of printers are you running? I've been running Bambu filament exclusively but thats just because I have a Bambu printer

Regardless of brand just make sure you dry it out first, makes a huge difference

100% recommend a Bambu. I have the X1C. Its friggin fast and it just works.

Also get the AMS if its in the budget. Its nice having a second roll queue'd up for when the first runs out mid-print, or having two separate materials loaded up so you can send ABS jobs without having to switch out the PLA or whatever. And dry your filament before use. If wife and daughter want to use it I'm sure they'll appreciate multi-color printing too.

Grab the liquid glue stick and a textured PEI plate if you plan to print other than PLA.

From amazon: I like a cheap deburring tool for cleaning up edges when needed, and a cheap nozzle cleaning kit too.

Also you'll burn through the included filament in no time so grab at least 2-4 rolls with spools as well. They're usually pretty quick to ship filament too, maybe 2-3 days to my door. You can use other brand filaments but the Bambu stuff is really high quality so I've never felt the need to switch that up.

Don't put abrasive filaments i.e. CF infused stuff through the AMS, they'll cut into the little feeder cup things.

The CF stuff and anything with additives ie. sparkle, wood etc can eventually plug the 0.4mm nozzle, so you could buy a 0.6mm nozzle for that if you want. Plugs are annoying but has only happened to me once and was due to CF filament.
Quick Update on this , I ended up getting the P1P with the add-ons. It is all wrapped under the tree now.
I didn't get the AMS. Since this is the first 3D printer I wasn't sure what they will do with this. Whether we will keep it or Upgrade to X1C. Also we can add the AMS later if we want to keep it.
Thanks for guiding me with the decision making process.

AMS is good for multi-color printing. For kids stuff it's probably even more handy but easy to add on later once you get to that point as well. If they like the printer then you have an easy future birthday present lined up.

One of the forums was talking about Using the AMS to print differing materials as interface between supports and model - I want to start playing around with that soon... Seems pretty sweet when it works correctly

Yeah you can print with soluble material so just soak it and they all fall away. I haven’t got a chance to try that yet.

PVA soluble is handy for some stuff - but so damned expensive and probably the only material I'd advocate buying in the smallest rolls possible. Stuff needs to live in a filament dryer with lots of dessicant for its life or it swells and turns into clog central.

Whereas hips/asa/petg as interface only doesn't require the same level of care and attention. But it sounds like if appropriate material is chosen - they won't bond and you get that lovely drop away supports (not gonna lie miss s3d's support settings)

Does it need to be solid or can it have some honeycomb layers?

It varies a lot by printer but its also not actual "work". I'm not local or id do it, id probably do it on 4hrs depending on the infill.

I'd offer to help but since it's for a server rack, I assume it needs some temp resistance... which my printer hates that kind of material.

Material wise, based on the screenshot of 50% infill = 100g, you can figure it out at ~$30/kg materials... so ~$3.
Typically, prints are charged out at 3x or more the material cost (depends how much the printing person wants to gouge).

In conclusion, break is heart that it's ~$20.

He was gifted this massive server rack by a friend and now needs to find a way to mount it properly.

No idea about temp resistance. It will be stand alone floor mounted. Hence the need for the mounts.

Thanks @SJW . I will let him know something is in the works.

I'm just printing one at a time. I should be engineering and not printing do-dads but hey, it's beyond right?
