Default Scam call almost got me

I just got a call today from "Rogers" that I went fairly deep down the hole on before the red flags sort of accumulated to the point of being hard to ignore, so I thought I'd share the experience.

Looking back, the first red flag which I ignored was when they said that in order to determine the amount of my discount, they wanted to know how much I was paying on my monthly plan. I gave them that, they gave me like 25% off.

Then they drop that I can upgrade my phone (which I paid off about a year ago and am technically due for an upgrade) and gave me a couple options. I choose the S24+ and they say it's an extra $5 a month (shockingly low and that's when my ears perked up a little) for 2 years.

My spider tingle really started to go off when they started asking me basic information that I felt they should already have like how to spell my name and my email. I started misspelling my name to see if they catch on (which they didn't) and when I started asking them to confirm the information they have for me, they started saying that a supervisor will send a confirmation email with his ID and whatnot (but still didn't verify an email address).

Eventually, I got off the phone with them, called Rogers to confirm if it was real or not - it wasn't. Normally, I'd say I'm fairly on-the-ball about scam calls and I'm a little ashamed to say I got about as far as I did, but it is what it is and thought I'd give everyone a cautionary reminder.

I send all calls to voicemail or Google Call Screener unless I'm expecting a call.

There is no reason to talk to people on the phone.

I'm beginning to think Blue cross is a scam. If you go to Mcdougall downtown, they state right on the door that they will not accept any in person appointments and any paperwork shoved under the door will not be processed.

For the last few weeks I have been unable to register online. It seems the only way to file a claim is through phone, of which its always absurdly busy.

Not saying this is or isn't a scam, but carriers are contracting companies for winback or retention. These third parties often don't have very limited information as they receive just a "lead" from the telcom company. The telcom, at the CSR level, would really have no insight into if it was a legit call or not so that isn't a good way to tell. The best bet is to just be cautious of the information they ask and if it could be used for nefarious purposes. Things like credit cards, sins, ect. Basic name and address isn't really that type of information. If they were asking for payment via card or gift card, then ya Id be concerned but if you look at redflagdeals there are TONS of people saving money through these cold call offers.

Thanks for sharing. I generally just don't answer these calls unless there's something I want to talk to them about. Past few weeks 'Rogers' have been showing up a lot on my phone and I just ignored them all. They may have been legit but I don't give a shit.

These third party outreach companies are the actual worst. Mercenaries who have no authority, and no loyalty to you or the company the pretend to represent. If I answer the phone and it's coming from a call centre, which I can always tell, I don't talk to them.

Scams are only going to get more difficult to differentiate - AI is going to be a big driver of this.

You mean the 3-5 seconds of dead-air after saying "Hello", and then the 'click' and sound of an accented person talking in a room full of other accented people?

lol yeah they are awesome, i enjoy playing with them if I have time. Pretty much the same standard approach.

Ill give you a deal, awesome. I ask for the full specifications of the phone or security system. How it compares to X. Then I say I am interested and they ask me for all my information. I end it with you're calling from X company. You should have my information. One time I got a guy to yell at me for wasting his time. hahhaha

Hilarious, my wife had the same scam call with the exception of the overwhelming background "call Center" noise can be heard. Immediately told her to hang up.

The jobs come to you now. Lots of texts. Great income too.

"Recruiting online part-time jobs, as long as the age is 22, the hourly salary is 150-500 Canadian dollars. Contact the manager for details. was... .me/16186080277"

If anyone is contacting you to get you a discount, it's a scam or I question their company profits.
That being said, duct cleaning. India just find out Canadians like clean ducts or wtf?!

Was it from 1-833-447-6665 by any chance?
