If you stick with essentials, HST and income tax is a draw if you make less than $100K per year. AB tax on $100K is $10K. BC tax on $100K is $7200. Or if go for more common wage of $50K, it would be $5K in AB and around $2100 in BC.

If you do a lot of big ticket items, then yeah HST hurts.

Also insurance won't be that huge of a gap either, UCP allows 15% raise and his $1200/year from 1.5 years ago would be $1400 today in AB.

Housing in any desirable part of BC remain the only huge cost differential vs Calgary. Your money doesn't go as far but may be ok if you lower your expectation.

Funny story... My Chinese colleagues were telling me about good Chinese food. They told me its "next to the place guys go". Not being from here I had no idea wtf they were talking about until they said its the strippers
