And Air Canada had an emergency today repositioning in AZ, preemptive shut down non-event emergency landing in tulsa.

    And the internet goes wild.
Everyone is an expert on anything aviation, they are just background noise along with the media. These are the same experts who pick the lowest fare even though it means flying on a Max.

It would actually be an ideal time to fly them to come out of mothballs. Aircraft break when they sit. They break a lot. Running them now would get the kinks out before flying becomes normal again.

First REVENUE flight with pax - obviously it didnt meet the MEL threshold, otherwise they would have departed regardless. They had non-rev, test flights earlier this month.

So Desert Snake on a Plane is possible?
When I was working at GE Aviation, we pulled off a manifold of an engine that had been stored in Arizona and there was a snake inside it

Obviously we all shit ourselves cos we thought it would be a diamondback or something

Once the SSPCA Dangerous Animals guys had been and removed it, turned out it wasn't a venomous snake, but still...

Animals and other bugs are actually a pretty big problem for aircraft that sit for a long time - I don't have a problem flying on the MAX but I would be less thrilled about flying on the first commercial flight after a long stint in storage haha.

Aircraft reactivation from storage has its specified inspections and functionals. Not to mention multiple test flights prior to return to service. Not something I’d be concerned about and any doubts are purely psychological.

    See waddington effect. https://blog.aopa.org/aopa/2014/01/1...ington-effect/

“tends to INCREASE breakdowns, and this can only be because it is doing positive harm by disturbing a relatively satisfactory state of affairs. There is no sign that the rate of breakdowns is starting to increase again after 40-50 flying hours when the aircraft is coming due for its next scheduled maintenance.”

So there is an actual term for that - never knew. Yea the more major the undertaking on a highly complex technical system, the more likelyhood something will go wrong. Post D check on a 744 for eg. - non-revenue test flights are standard and many things are snagged.

More worrisome headlines for the 737 Max aircraft.

Experts say the 737Max is safe, we should listen to experts.

Even if every concern with the plane is founded it’s probably still safer than half the planes people happily flew on in the 80’s and 90’s.

Not 737 but seems like Boeing is learning too much from Microsoft.

    https://www.theregister.com/2020/04/...ys_stale_data/

Boeing 787s must be turned off and on every 51 days to prevent 'misleading data' being shown to pilots
US air safety bods call it 'potentially catastrophic' if reboot directive not implemented

There are many, MANY airplane with a similar issue. Hell, the amount of snags I've "fixed" by simply turning it off and on again is probably 100x more than you've had to with your own home electronics.

This might be a dumb question but wouldn't they get turned off every night when they arent flying?

Not always. In winter they keep avionics running during layovers if it's at the gate. Airplanes hate cold weather, and you can get shitloads of problems starting up avionics in -20°c. Even in summer they may keep the battery bus hot for essentials.
