I dont really think that's huge news tbh. Boeing still has a backlog of over 6000 units. 25 units here and there wont break the bank. Plus those are relatively small orders from legacy carriers
The big deal is JAL never had a single aisle plane that isn't a Boeing, ever.

And A321neo can carry more people than Max 9 and 10. And the Max 9 fiasco is delaying 10. So now there are 6500 A312neo on the books compared to 1600 Max 9s.

Carry more people doesn't make it better. It all depends on routes. That's why they make it in various sizes.

It'll be a real problem when southwest or Ryanair orders airbus. For an order of 10 from JAL, which already has airbus in its fleet, it's somewhat irrelevant.

The significance of the JAL order is nuanced.

It is a really big deal. The fact that their entire narrow body fleet is currently 737 means that when they take delivery of the A321, they need to train their pilots and FAs. This isn't easy or cheap. They also need train their AMEs and store new parts for the A321 that a not interchangeable with the 737.

The 737 MAX10 is vapourware that likely won't see deliveries until mid to late 2025 or 2026, No matter what beoing is saying. Even then, deliveries are going to be even slower than they are today due to all the quality issues they are having.

The other part of their order is also a clear signal, 21 A350s and ZERO 787 or 777 planes. JAL has 150 Boeing wide bodies, many of which are set to retire.

KAL ordered 33 A350s and no Boeing wide bodies. Again, clear signal.

It's not about the numbers. It's about they are willing to switch and set up the infrastructure to switch which isn't cheap. Having dual source definitely drive up the bargaining power but it's an expensive one and one that's not acted on lightly. And these are allies.

The constant failure of Boeing has shown that it can't be trusted and businesses are divesting. This is especially bad when C919 can potentially create a threat in developing country markets about a decade or so out if 737 is being almost totally shut out in China.

    Boeing CEO steps down.

Should be outright fired IMHO. Sad it took a loyal customer to switch for it to happen.
