Default BMW X5M Anyone owned one?

Pretty seriously considering picking up a 2010 X5M. I'm well aware of the maintenance cost nightmare of BMW's after owning 4 of them, but I'm a mechanic. So I figure this would be a secondary vehicle, and if anything breaks I can just fix it on my own time.

Main thing I'm wondering about id fuel mileage though. I would be planning to drive this thing a lot and mile it out. Ratings show it around 20mpg highway. Is that realistic? Can it do better? Or is way worse in real life scenarios?

Anything out of the normal BMW things I need to look out for like Ignition coils, Coolant overflow tank, thermostat, etc?

based on what I know about that engine (not much) I hope you like buying expensive batteries every year.

I think someone at work has one. It's the one that when you fire it up it blasts away trying to sound like a Lambo for the first 30sec isn't it?
It's a nice looking unit and this person drives it all winter and you know they're not plugging it in #becauseBMW is too good for that... That company's insistence on run flat tires and zero block heaters will keep me away from that brand maybe forever. Unless i8.
I guess I have little to offer but that silly startup sound is just kind of farty instead of properly aggressive. Just one person's opinion I suppose.

Edit - you've owned them so you know there's a big difference between what a dealership will force an owner into for "maintenance" vs actually proactively addressing problems. You'll probably be fine and if you find you're not, you can get out of it before it cripples you financially.

There’s a black one postsd on kijiji for $15k right now.

From what I’ve read they like to eat up batteries and fuel injectors.

Apparently the X5M is now an offroad vehicle. I learned something from posting this thread after all.

    That is insanely cheap.

You know, there's a point where a used old X5M stops being a bad idea and starts being a good idea, and I think 15k is around that mark. Even if the engine blows the fuck up you would still break even (or almost even) on a part out.

But this is coming from a guy who bought a $10k M5 and had good luck with it.

    @Sentry

I thought the same thing too. It will probably need some work at that price point but it could be worth the gamble.

I have mine (X6M) for 8 year now, (wife drives it usually) good car, it has the ECU tune and BMC filter done by Tunerwork, it is fast!! ^_^
Is it reliable as Lexus? No .. but not that bad compare to newer BMW, (less problem than our 535) we only put 55,000km in 8 year, couple small leak here and there, was fixed by BMW (extended warranty), service cost isn't that bad, cheaper than Cayenne Turbo, replaced battery once, warning light on once a while when extreme cold, the only problem I have is weird, the sunroof was "grinded" but my wife never open the sunroof anyway, so it is fine.

I guess the trick is find one with good history, and low km, it is a BMW, once it is over 100,000km, or say 150,000 km for sure, will start to give you more headache.

Gas mileage .. is somewhat bad, ~ 18L/100km, but for a 600+ HP, over 5000 lb SUV, no complain, it is better than my M6 and Cayenne Turbo, can't compare to Lexus Hybrid ..

Had a 2013 X5M for about 6-7 months and had no issues with it in that time. It was also under warranty so I didn't really care. I would be scared to own one out of warranty just because of the potential issues but if you can do your own repairs or have deep pockets for them then go for it. It is a fun vehicle.

Have you driven one? I found it to be a total yawn.

edit: and this is coming from a guy who daily's an F150, so the bar ought to be nice and low. I might have owned the CTSV at that time though so maybe my calibration was off.

I owned a 2016 X5M. Easily one of the best vehicles ive owned for overall practicality, handlings, fun, speed etc. Unfortunately needed a 7 passenger suv, so sold it. Would definately buy one again.

The 2015+ are miles ahead of the previous generation. One of the best performance vehicles out there.

Previous generation's problematic engine, raw, and unrefined, all of which were updated in the newer X5/X6M (F85,F86 chassis) models.
