Default Booking a hotel room for 2 people but actually having 3 people use it.

Is there anything stopping a person from doing this?

Thinking of booking a room in Vegas in April. There will be 3 of us in the room (2 queens), but it is cheaper if I book it under the guise of 2 people staying in it.

Think the hotel will notice and make me pay the extra? Should I even bother with this plan?

I've never heard of anyone charging for extra occupancy...

I've done quite a bit of travelling, and AFAIK the guest count is mostly so they know how many guests are in the room (in the event of emergency), how many cards to provide, as well as they don't want you packing 15 people in to a room with 2 beds.

When you select having 3 guests (vs 2), does it increase the price?

I did it in Vancouver last year. They wanted something like $75/night more for 3 people vs 2 people for the exact same room. Suffice to say I booked it for 2 people and avoided the obvious things all going to the front desk together. Worst that'll happen is they do notice and ask you to pay for that extra person.

If the added cost were reasonable and reflective of the additional usage (a little water, electricity, wear and tear) then I would have paid it, but it was just a total cash grab.

Do this all the time, booked our ski trip condo for 6 when we had 8 and saved $50/night.

Depends how obvious you are being lol.

Depending on the hotel you might have isssues with person #3 using the pools.

we’ve done it a couple of times, even booking for 2 with 4 of us going.
however for some type of hotels or resorts you have to declare how many of us for the included meal and transportation (not in Vegas)

Zero problem in Vegas, even with all of you using the pools.

Aria checked last time I stayed there. Wanted to see a key card for each person. Was a few years back though.

Venetian and palazzo didn't give a shit when I was there this month.

Can always get a spare key card by saying you lost one too. There's always a way.

Totally. The bigger advice is don’t be obvious about it and ask for trouble.

That's generally good advice anywhere you travel. Don't ask for trouble.

Did this once in Montana and got kicked out the hotel. Had 5 people for a 4 person room. Claimed it was a fire hazard to not declare the correct amount of people. We had 4 people go through the front and the 5th came through the back entrance after we got him a key card. They must've been watching on the camera. Didn't even allow us to explain or purchase an extra room. Just said that we have to leave immediately. I guess we're just unlucky since others seem to have had no issues. Makes me wonder what if you have invite a guest who doesn't plan to stay the night? How would they know who's a temporary guest and who's staying the night?

I have thought about doing this before, but never have actually done it. Worst I have done was have my mother-in-law stay with us in our AirBNB in Osaka a month ago, when the booking was only for myself and my wife. She came down from Kobe and stayed for 3 nights, but the apartment had 5 double beds, we used 3 of them, in my comment at the end to AirBNB host was that I was sick and had to sleep in a separate room for a few nights, thus the usage of an extra bed.

Sheepishly, I used to do this all the time.

Usually they charge $10/20 per extra person in a room, in excess of 2.

We would go on ski trips and cram 8 of us in a room when we were in university lol. It is do-able if you want to save cash!
