Default Is it too early for lawn fertilizer?

My grass and at least an inch of dirt is soft and mushy. With all the rain /snow we're getting this week, so you think it's a good time to fertilize? Or too soon still?

Too soon brother. Only that top inch is thawed, the rest is frozen.

You realize you are talking to the guy who made his own furniture out of salad bowls right?

I've got grass growing in my front lawn. Is it time yet?

Walking the pooch today, and someone in my neighborhood had a sprinkler on. Now THAT is too soon.

Soil temps are still so low that you're not going to get much out of a urea-based fertilizer, which pretty much every residential fertilizer is. There's usually quite a bit of latent nitrogen in the soil anyway that gets freed up after the first big rains in spring (especially if you fertilize regularly to begin with), so you can save a few bucks just by waiting to see what green-up and growth that brings. If it's not getting watered in you'll lose a bunch to volitilization (and any ammonium in there won't do anything until it gets watered into the soil) so a good rule is that if you don't think you're ready to water, you're not ready to fertilize either.

Finally did it. My grass is growing like crazy this week, so figured it was a good time. Dug down to get a soil test, and I can't believe how dry it is 4" down. Had to turn the sprinkler system on a month early

Nah, next worse thing you can do to ensure a big dump is fertilize... Worst is planting flowers.

Oh god your wife already planted flowers didn't she?
