Grey area? Realistically isn't money a metric of success? Especially at an arts school. Asians also tend to buy education.

What's crazy is that people are surprised at rich people using money to influence people.

That's fine, but bragging about it is the crazy part.

If nobody sees you do it, did you really do it?

Paying for access to top university has been around forever.

The current outrage is about someone trying to make a business out of it based on that concept.

For out of the loop on why Dre has to clear himself:

Bad optics but really don't think there was anything shaddy... He donated to have a building built/named after himself 6 years prior to his daughter even being old enough to apply. Pretty much inline with his normal philanthropy as well.

    Philanthropy

During May 2013, Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine donated a $70 million endowment to the University of Southern California to create the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation. The goal of the Academy has been stated as "to shape the future by nurturing the talents, passions, leadership and risk-taking of uniquely qualified students who are motivated to explore and create new art forms, technologies, and business models." The first class of the Academy began in September 2014.[116]

In June 2017, it was announced that Dr. Dre has committed $10 million to the construction of a performing arts center for the new Compton High School. The center will encompass creative resources and a 1,200-seat theater, and is expected to break ground in 2020. The project is a partnership between Dr. Dre and the Compton Unified School District.[117]

Their bigger concerns should be fraudulent companies in China helping their citizens to get into the Ivy League schools.

Crazy fact about China and post-secondary: at the end of high school for two full days you do testing on all the material you have learned prior. That one score determines which universities you get into.

    A long but fascinating read:

An estimated 90 per cent of all recommendation letters for Chinese applicants to United States universities are fake. Some 70 per cent of application essays are not written by students, and 50 per cent of grades transcripts are falsified.
But it doesn't matter because they add to the university's bottom line and they will just fail you out if needed.

I love the way this played out. Dre tweets about his daughter getting in, "no jail time" (referencing the recent bribe scandal he is apparently proud to not be a part of).

Forgets that he donated $70M a few years ago to that very school, 140 times the bribe amount

Just spare change from his cup holder. I forget about those little donations here and there, too.
