Default Passport expiry and traveling to Mexico

We booked a last minute trip to Mexico leaving Apr 9. My sons passport expires July 16. Are we good or should I get a rushed passport? I’m getting mixed answers. Anyone here traveled with a passport that’s a couple months from expiry?

Should have minimum 6 months prior to expiry from my understanding to be safe. Some countries are fine with 3 months, but if you have to renew, may as well do it now.

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

The 6 month rule applies if you are driving. If you are flying, as long as the passport is valid through your return flight, you should be fine. You can call CBP and confirm directly

Dangerous information. I've seen many travelers turned away at airports because of expiring passports. It even happened to my girlfriend while flying from Medelling to Ecuador for 10 days over Easter as her passport was up in 5 months. She even had an appointment already booked at the embassy in Bogota for the renewal but they wouldn't budge.

Interesting. I suppose it really depends on the destination country. I had called CBP asking that question in regards to US and Mexico and that's what I was told. That was a couple years ago. Don't know if it's changed since

Fair enough - you may be right that the US / Mexico "officially" only require the passport to be valid until your scheduled return date but I'd suggest he confirm with the airline as they may be more strict.

Should have no problem at all. However, you have plenty of time to get the renewal done before you go if you pay for the express option. Better safe than sorry, I would just go get the passport renewed.

    Its country dependent.
Mexico says valid for duration of the stay: https://travel.gc.ca/destinations/mexico

Whereas HK for example says 1mon after expiry of visa: https://travel.gc.ca/destinations/hong-kong

Not true in practice. Often the airlines will not let you board ifit is within 3 months.

I say just rush and get it done. Don't take the risk. Last thing you want is for the whole family to have to turn around because you come across a custom/border officer who woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

This. So much judgement based decisions down the line, not worth the trouble.

    +1

The boarder is just one of those places where you have so much to lose and so little to gain by fucking around.

Or worse, just some idiot who doesn't understand the policy and is winging it.

This came up on my news feed a couple days ago.

    https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/check-...port-1.4353762

Araujo said she arrived at Toronto Pearson International Airport and checked in and and went to board her flight just like any other trip.

However, she was prevented from boarding the plane after she was told her passport wasn’t valid for her stay in Europe.

“God, I fell to my knees because I couldn’t believe they would not let me board the plane,” she said.

Araujo said she tried to reason with the airline staff at the airport.

“[I said] ‘Here my mom is on her deathbed and you won’t let me on the plane,’” she said. “They basically told me ‘No you can’t board the plane because your expiry date is within the next two months… it has to be at least three months.’”

Araujo’s passport expires on May 13.

Even though she had planned to travel to Portugal for only a week and would be home before her passport’s expiry date, Araujo’s travel documents were not valid.

On its website, Air Transat clearly states that “Canadians travelling in a European Union country must hold a passport valid for at least three months beyond the date of expected return from that country.”

    Get a rushed passport.
I think a lot of airline docs state passport should be valid for six months.
Or better still.. leave the kid at home.

    Thanks everyone
I’m just going to get a rush passport just in case. I did call sunwing and they said it’s fine but not gonna take the risk.

Ignore all the "should" advice. It's so cheap relative to the trip cost and possible last minute consequence that taking a gamble is stupid.

Get it renewed, pay the rush, and be done with it. Renew for 10 years if you can.

I was wondering about that, which is why I said "if you can". Makes sense given how their appearance would change so much.

Can't babys get 5yr passports though? That is even more ridiculous haha.

Airlines mostly check because they lose $ on sending you back home if you are not admitted into your destination country.
