Mercedes MCT is pretty good as a happy medium between ZF and a DCT. Essentially it’s a good auto with a wet startup clutch instead of a torque converter.

When I bought my kid a car a few years back I told him only if it was a standard.
Driving a stick shift is a skill everyone should have.
Now he's away at college and I have a jeep in front of my house that barely gets driven.
Oh well my other son will be 16 in a few months. he can learn as well.

2017 Jeep Cherokee Limited
Few more years, and that'll be the same as saying "I'm making my kids learn math on an abacus, it's a skill everyone should have".
I mean, I learned to drive stick when I was like 10... but times are changing.

I was hesitant before I made the move from S3 to S5 and I don't doubt that I would feel the difference if I was to drive them back to back. I have the ZF for a year now and I haven't had one negative thought about not having the DSG. I almost exclusively drive it in manual mode. I can only speak on the ZF in the S5. I don't have any experience with the ZF in other cars. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
My car (Lexus ISF) has a ZF8 in it, and it's fantastic. Can be full old man mode, super smooth, early shifts, great mileage. Hit a couple buttons and it can bang off shifts in 0.1s at WOT, rev match and bark on downshifts, etc. I'm positive there are DCT/DSGs out there that are better, but it ain't by much... or at least not enough that will matter in a DD application. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Software on it determines how it feels. The same transmission in a sportier car would have much sportier programming. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

It’s not particularly great in my Dodge truck either, but I’m sure the Chrysler software engineers are the bottom feeders in North America. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I dont miss it at all, 6 of my personal vehicles are manuals. I just love being able to pick and choose the gears, although I despise it in stop and go traffic, My foot or hand often get tired from constantly actuating the clutch in those situations. Two of my trucks have auto's with manual valve bodies, which I greatly prefer. I'd prefer auto's for the semi's though, driving the 9,13,15 or 18 speeds gets old, very very fast.

Has anyone run into issues regarding reliability and potential repair costs living with a DSG/DCT post-warranty?
Just wondering if that should be a serious concern. (Currently eying the mk7.5 Golf R as a contender for my next DD).
Tuning obviously has to be different in something that idiots will try and tow over payload with, and it still needs to last through the warranty period. Not to mention a truck is not a sports car. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Haven't heard any nightmare stories. Have an acquaintance who has an early GTI with DSG, crapped out at around 180k kms and got a used replacement installed for around $1k.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Nothing... Im whipping around a 6spd 335i for the summer and its awesome.
I just love having the extra bit of control/connection with the transmission through the clutch.
Don’t tell that to most of Calgary and Red DeerThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I'm all over driving German cars out of warranty. I changed the fluid in my Audi S-tronic transmission last year (70,000ish km) and it was pristine. Most of my time driving is on the Henday, so it's a blast up the gears then leave it in 7th for most of the drive. I think I'm pretty easy on it, but if you don't appreciate that there are clutches in there and abuse it, I'm sure you could shorten the life. To me all transmissions are magic boxes that should never be opened in my presence, so if it does crap out I'll swap a new one in and then deal with the old unit. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. That’s amazing. I assumed some of these DCTs have 5-digit replacement costs (new). This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
You are way more likely to lose the engine than the DSG in a GTI.
