Default Need suggestions for alternate internet service providers

I just got a notification that my Shaw bill is going up another $3 and will now total $90 per month for just internet and I'm only getting 25 down, 2 up. This is ridiculous since the 100 package is $2 more.

I see there are other smaller providers like Primus offering faster internet for around $40 per month, does anyone use any of these providers? I refuse to use Telus, that company is the devil and I'd rather have no internet.

I use light speed and have been happy so far. 40$ a month for 75 down / 7.5 up and no cap. I believe you have to buy the modem for 100$ish. I think the 300mbit package was like 70 a month or something. Not much more and considering upgrading

I am using teksavvy (Cable internet) for a few years now with no issues. The cost of the modem was 100 and there was a install fee (shaw tech to come out and ensure the line was active or some crap like that) but they have treated me well. With 3rd party providers, they use Shaw or telus last mile to your house so you can get either cable or DSL.

Speeds have been constant for me with no issues. I don't game or stream 4K so no issues with latency. Just websurfing, downloading and some youtube videos. If you go to https://www.dslreports.com/forum/teksavvy (not sure if you need a login to read the comments), you can see any issues folks are generally talking about. Personally I am waiting for their tek tv to be available and depending on pricing, drop shaw completely.

    Hope it helps.

Why not just get the 600Mbps $80/mo deal most people have? Even if you only get half of that it sounds like it would be faster and cheaper than your current setup. 2 yr term though if that matters.

Seems kinda weird. As far as I know telus doesn't wholesale fibre so I'm not sure how you'd get their service in the city.

FYI Mar, there are only 2 options in Calgary. FTTH/DSL from Telus or Cable from Shaw.

Everyone else are just resellers of these 2 companies' infrastructure.

I don't know when the lawsuit and dust settles on the ongoing wholesale rate lawsuit (https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/tel...rnet-1.5302941). But I was able lowball Shaw retention for 300Mbps service for $60/mth for 2 years before the court stopped CRTC in Sep and price sprung back. This service usually goes for around $75/mth from resellers and before the court order, they were charging only $4x.00/month.

So you can try Shaw retention to see if they give you a sweet deal or just jump to a reseller if you hate them. But I don't think the lower reseller rate will be back unless the big telco loses in court.

Im on Telus non contract. Just internet. I pay about $45ish a month. I think im on the 15 or 25mps.
Buts a six month promo. I have to call and talk in my sweet English accent like Oliver Twist every six months and say 'Please sir, can I have some more of the promo'.
Ive been doing this for five years.

Why not go to a reseller and avoid that?

    Lightspeed:

DSL - 40$ per month for 50mbps. I think for DSL you'd have to either have a phone (6$/month) or a naked DSL fee (also 6$/month conveniently). So basically same price for double the speed.

Or for cable for 40$ it's 75 down / 7.5 up as a regular price. No need to call and deal with promos.

It's worth it. I got on a 49.95$ plan for 300mbit with no caps. Never have to worry about not getting on another promo or anything. It used to be higher priced but they actually emailed me and reduced my plan a few months ago without me doing anything. But I think since Sept the wholesale rates bumped up a bit so not quite as good of deals to be had but still better than Telus/Shaws promo jumping

Yeah, one time purchase. Forget what it cost, maybe 80$
