Can anyone explain to me this “Trudeau hates Alberta” mentality when he bought a $4.5 Billion pipeline project?

The pipeline was bought because it would have cost us billions if we don't deliver this line to the Chinese. Not because he wants to.

Then there is Bill C69 which I believe just adds more red tape. But given TMX's getting this many road blocks anyway without C69, net effect of C69 is probably not as great as opponents may think it is.

I'm in a hurry so I'll write up the short version...

Originally, we had an open and free market. Companies could raise capital, follow all government rules, get approvals, build projects, make money, hire people, create jobs, and flourish.

NDP and Liberals come in, start messing with existing approvals, shutdown projects with tanker bans, trigger investors to pull out of Alberta, they mess with the "open and free market" and show that you can't do a oil project unless the government buys it at an inflated cost. Ultimately, the polticians choose which of these projects (and businesses) flourish.

Don't forget that his father wanted to nationalize Alberta's oil. It's odd that Trudeau was so obsessed with stopping oil and gas, until they quashed a bunch of projects and purchased one (which is now owned by the government). And hasn't been built.

How does buying a pipeline benefit Alberta? He created an environment where the private company that wanted to build it couldn't. He's never going to build it, and he's never going to allow any others to be built. It was an expensive and meaningless gesture.

    And actually in addition...

They know that capital was rapidly fleeing Alberta. They have departments in the government that forecast policy changes. They knew that this would cause many layoffs, and contracts to be terminated for contractors (which they were fired, and cut), and it caused tons of SMB oil and gas companies to go out of business, leaving their staff without jobs. They also knew this would leave tons of abandoned wells.

Ultimately it trickles down to all industries. You end up with 100,000+ people losing their jobs, 150,000+ contractors without work. People stop buying homes, less groceries, less vehicles, less luxury items, less mandatory items... This trickles down to cutoffs and layoffs in those industries (homebuilders, grocers, etc).

Exactly, Trudeau is a Socialist with Fascist leanings (at least in the dictionary sense of forcible suppression of opposition, and strong regimentation of society and of the economy).

Can you provide more info on what they did to hinder the project? My understanding is they approved it in 2016 but it was the legal challenges from the BC government and First Nations groups that tied it up in court and was the cause for the delays.

Killed every other option so that any fake environmental opposition could focus their efforts on a single project and kill it more easily. That's the big one. Choosing winners and losers in terms of private industry projects doesn't work and doesn't actually make the "chosen winners" any stronger, it just weakens the entire industry.

He has no intention of building the pipeline, and he didn’t buy it... taxpayers did.

So he spent a bunch of other peoples money to make his own headache go away. What a generous fucker.

Alberta doesn’t want taxpayers to buy shit for us, we want the feds to fuck off.

I find it almost unbelievable that the top news story on BBC for a while was about Trudeau's Halloween costumes from 15+ years ago, but politics never fails to find new levels of pettiness. Perhaps a bigger problem is that people are actually offended by that

Old brown face is an asshole, but you guys are some whacked out conspiracy nuts lol. Yeah, he bought a pipeline so he could keep it from getting built.

The old approval process was very similar, but they got away with a ton of backroom deals, and glad handing. They didn't follow their own rules, and we are now in an environment where you are held to account a bit more. Just because you got away with rape 20 years ago doesn't entitle you to get away with it today.

It would if you were JT, but I digress......

This Country doesn't have a hope for a good leader this election, regardless of stripe.

Agreed. We are heading in the direction of the US where we will finally realize who politicians really serve (ie, not Canadians).

A abused wife that should file for divorce and her neighbor in time will prob hook up with her. He lives by the water and she loves the ocean. He could do with her garden vegetables, he says he hates them. But he needs them for sustenance and the extra income from the farmers market would be nice.
But everyone telling her that she is in the wrong.. she should stay, take the abuse and make it work.

    ^This!!!
Bought it with everyone's money to intentionally tank it. One of the most brilliant political moves I've ever seen.
Our country's leader is at war with our province.

Introduced the first instance in the world of someone banning tankers off a cost.
