I wouldn't say this is Canada wide, and I wouldn't say this is all Calgary either, just a large portion in this city that act like dinosaurs and refuse to change, let alone embrace it. I'm not talking about rocking the boat here with change, I'm talking about struggles in optimizing simple processes within an organization that can make things more efficient. It's a different mentality working with people outside of Calgary. At a minimum, they're receptive to change, and would entertain improving instead of fearing it. It's not just the companies, it's the people behind it. Completely different mentality.

Union shops have it's own unique challenges because optimization is bad haha.

Don't get me wrong, both types of people have their own merits. On the other end of the spectrum, you have people in NorCal where they want change for the sake of change, and you end up with the half baked shit that comes out of Silicon Valley because they forgot to look at how things work with everyone not inside their bubble haha.
I dunno, sounds like you have some locality bias.

Internet trolls have much power, can crush braincells, thought processes, even re-train logic. Brainstorm Green Needle to find the weaknesses and use them. However, I do believe that not all trolls are malicious. Many are enlightenment trolls that will thwack you with their club until they have knocked some sense into you.

I work with companies all over Canada and the USA. Albertan companies are laggards because their adoption rate of new tech/ideas is low. Sure, I'm in marketing and not something more O&G centric, but the trend is there and we (my agency) have commented on it more than once.

Marketing I absolutely believe. Alberta O&G companies have never needed to market to sell their products, so that industry here is pathetic.

But I would like to know, what "new tech/ideas" are you referring to?

I wonder if things would actually get done if we had a guy like Kennedy who simply took the stage and said "I believe in the next decade, we should build a pipeline, not because it is hard, but because it is easy, and because we actually need to use oil." Would it actually get done? I have my doubts. Gen Z gonna have to figure out this mess.

Considering 2 years ago I was still building windows XP machines for a client to replace their legacy hardware and they had zero inclination to every upgrade I'd say he's pretty accurate.

I feel like "onshore" oil and gas is like that everywhere. They aren't adopting much new technology in OKC or Houston either. Although it's coming. There's some neat things in the works from some actual legit tech companies that will totally revolutionize some very antiquated processes.

I've experienced this myself, with the resistance to change and innovate, whether with local companies, or even just regular citizens.

Which has always struck me as really weird, considering how Calgary has become what it is... Calgary is literally made up almost entirely of people that have been willing to uproot their lives and move here from somewhere else, for the sake of change and betterment. It seems once they get here, they've used up all of their openness to change hahaha.

Wasn't XP considered Window's best OS for a long time? Trying to push the market into Vista/7/8 Just flopped because the value proposition wasn't there for enterprise users, only retail.

I don't know I could be dumb. But value proposition is the key there. No break no fix!

It’s also an industry that has been burned hard by half baked IT “solutions” that break functionality and corporate tech initiatives with eye watering cost overruns and bloated support structures.

Lots of bright ideas that turn into unusable pieces of garbage and bloated beauracracy.

Resistance to technological change isn’t entirely unfounded in Oil & Gas unfortunately. Especially with proven histories of low ROI.

Perfect example is the Phoenix pay system. But, I suppose anything government has a higher likelihood of being botched from the get go.
