Default Computer turning on by itself with WOL off?

Has anyone ever encountered a computer that turns on by itself? I made sure to ensure that WOL was off and also turned off fast boot. Still turns on every day or so when it is off. I am guessing at this point it is a hardware/case fault, but before I dig further was wondering if anyone had seen anything similar?

Wifi/Ethernet/Xbox controller adapter all WOL off and magic packet off. Power options seem to be fine and everything in the bios to wake is also disabled.

Never had a PC turn on by itself but every time I have seen a PC turn off by itself it was the PSU, including a time I paid memory express to look at my PC and was subsequently told my PSU was fine (it wasn't) lol.

That probably doesn't help you too much but any time there are power issues I'd look at the PSU first.

Is it turned ON from a completely OFF (Shut Down) mode - OR waking from asleep / hibernation mode?

I had an issue way back with an old Logitech (OG) G5 Mouse, like 5 years old, and randomly it would wake the PC from asleep. Ended up getting a new mouse, but there was a way to disable wake from sleep with mouse/ keyboard actuation (disable).

Yeah, I should check that as well when I check the case.

It is completely off. I wish there was a way to see what turns on the computer like you can see what can/did wake the computer.

If I am not mistaken, you should be able to check event viewer to see when it powered on and hopefully it will provide some details. Should be able to enter event viewer in windows search or this should also work. press “Ctrl + R” and type “eventvwr.msc . If you know when it turned on that should help narrow it down.

    Yup, there's a way, check this: https://www.ghacks.net/2013/12/31/find-pc-wakes-stop/

If you catch it early it should be the very first event, you'll find what's starting it!

Did it start doing this recently or has it always been like this?

Does it do this if the ethernet cable is disconnected?

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...m-power-states - you want to confirm which state your system was in before power up.

    Soft Off state (S5)
The soft off state is when the system fully shuts down without a hibernation file. Soft off is also known as a "full shutdown." During a full shutdown and boot, the entire user session is torn down and restarted on the next boot. Consequently, a boot/startup from this state takes significantly longer than S1-S4. A full shutdown (S5) occurs when a system restart is requested (or an application calls a shutdown API).

    Mechanical Off state (G3)
In this state, the system is completely off and consumes no power. The system returns to the working state only after a full reboot.

    Wake-on-LAN behavior
The wake-on-LAN (WOL) feature wakes the computer from a low power state when a network adapter detects a WOL event (typically, a specially constructed Ethernet packet).

WOL is supported from sleep (S3) or hibernate (S4). It is not supported from fast startup or soft off (S5) shutdown states. NICs are not armed for wake in these states because users do not expect their systems to wake up on their own.

    Note

WOL is not officially supported from soft off (S5). However, the BIOS on some systems may support arming NICs for wake, even though Windows is not involved in the process.

Yeah, I can see when it starts, but since it is from off, it is no luck seeing what it was. No programs running or anything weird when I log in.

It has only done it in probably the last few weeks. I have not tried disconnecting the ethernet but I will try that. It should be mechanical off though as I never put my computer to sleep, only off or on. I'll open it up tomorrow as well to take a look.

Thats known as S5, or soft off. G3 is mechanical off (hit PSU switch).

Whoops, I can't read. I will look into that as well thanks.

So far disconnected a few more USB devices (hub and steam controller dongle) and unplugged the ethernet. Hasn't happened in the last two days so far. Check the button/switch connections, seemed to be seated fine and checked the PSU visually and nothing weird for now.

So it seemed to be OK with the ethernet unplugged. I did find a setting on the ethernet adapter called "Shutdown Wake Up". Not sure how I missed that one as I have never heard that wording before. Seems to be OK for now with a few days of good luck now. Thanks guys.

might be worth investigating what on your networking is sending a magic packet to start it up.

Yeah, I will try and figure that out. Identical network for a long time now so I find it odd it just started happening.
