Non-story for the most part. Lays/Pepsi owns the patent/IP for their potato strain and farmers must sign an agreement to buy the seeds and grow the potatoes. If the farmers decide not to pay the licensing fee, they are not allowed to save seeds and grow them any longer - this is very standard for registered commercial plant varieties. These farmers appear to have continued planting the FC5 after refusing the agreement, so Lays/Pepsi went after them. They're not after the money - Pepsi/Lays offered to drop the case if the farmers quit growing the potatoes without paying for the license fee.
