That’s not usually how it goes. The first million takes the longest to reach. The next million takes incrementally less time, and so on.
This is true. For anyone who has not made it there yet, streamers/balloons don't go off when you get there. If you have the typical mindset of someone who achieves this goal, you get there and realize it's not much and so you don't get excited by it because you're looking to the next goal. First one took 10 years, second took a year, etc.

I was planning to semi-retire at 35 (34 now) but I don't see it. Wife finishes medical school this year, we're undecided about kids also. It will be a number of years before she starts making enough money that I can pull back. The last point is spot on though

We had to many kids, so I’m stuck working till 55-60. That’s the goal hopefully the wife works a few extra years since she hasn’t worked in 6 years and won’t for another 4-5.

It’s pretty shocking the amount of people that are avoiding kids to “live their lifestyle”. I didn’t think I’d be a person that likes kids but they are so interesting, entertaining and challenging. Life we be boring without them. Travel would be awsome with no kids though.

Already working on my exit. Moving full time to South Carolina. My wife has a place down there about 35 minutes south of Charlotte. It is crazy how cheap most thing s are down there. Gas, food, booze...and of course housing. Our current place is 2400 sqft on 1.75 acres backing on to a pond with a pool. The price if we were to list it is only $325k! Once I get down there we will make a decision on keeping this place or downsizing and moving a bit closer to Charlotte. In addition we are going to buy a vacation place within a 3 hour flying time from Charlotte. That gives us some really good options. I'm currently thinking of starting my 3D rendering business again as a way to transition into semi-retirement. I can do that anywhere as long as I have a good internet connection.

The thought of never needing snow tires again is very appealing!

Also with kids... having them at home for the first 5 years will make you wish you had a job to go to. Not all in a terrible way.. but its nice to have a place to go that is quiet.

I am glad you feel this way. You should be having kids.

I think of kids and I think of a massive encumbrance on my life and how I want to live. I do not have any interest in kids whatsoever. I recognize how important they are to our society and our future, but am not in any way interested in raising my own.

I have kids. The hardest thing but most rewarding thing I've done. It isn't for everybody. As far as travel goes, they never really got in the way and we have taken them on trips since they were 3 & 1.5 years old.

I wish more people were this honest and mature.

People just pump out kids because they seem to think it's the thing to do.

Tell that to basically everyone else I talk to whenever the subject comes up.

According to most people, my wife and I are:

    • Selfish
    • Irresponsible
    • Arrogant
    • Heartless
    • About 50,000 variations of the above.

You need to find new friends/acquaintances.

Some people derive satisfaction from living life on their own terms and some people (in relationships) think incorrectly that having kids will solve marriage issues. Its completely messed up.

As far as retirement - because I already do what I love, and live semi-retired as far as I am concerned (ie. I do what I want, when I want most of the time) - I will never 'stop' working. Thats one of the biggest downfalls of many people actually - they stop doing what they (at least) liked for work and then die (metaphorically) sitting in front of the TV.

I've invested/divested into so many things but the biggest influence will be the cryptocurrency investments I made 5 years ago. Make no mistake about it, FIAT currency is being slowly devalued and, as many have stated a 30,000$ income in 30 years could mean 3,000$ in todays dollars. Digital currency is the long term macro economic trend of the globe that will counter this trend.

F%ck them. Who are they to tell you how to live your life. Like I said, having kids isn't for everyone regardless of their reasons. I think people are so judgy because they regret some of their life decisions.

When you challenge peoples' own self delusions, they get sketchy. You're basically challenging their own carefully constructed and maintained worldview. Same as religion. It's just cognitive dissonance on their part turning into hate.

Maybe it's not your views on child rearing that is giving them that opinion. Maybe they just know you well.
