Default Roof top or hatch mount tents - anyone try them?

So I have a couple back country trips planned this summer, so instead of dragging my truck and TT around the countryside I have been thinking of buying a rooftop or hatch mount tent for my wife's CRV. Taking the CRV makes the most sense with space/fuel mileage and so on, and I seen online there are a few options for these. Has anyone ever tried them? Can they comfortably fit 2 people and a dog? I like the idea of being off the ground, more so than the hatch style, but the cost difference is huge!! $300-$400 vs $2000. Also the hatch style would be nice as you could heat the tent with your vehicle.

    thoughts?

By "hatch mount tent do you mean something like:
I don't think you'd want to be "heating" the tent via the hatch of an SUV- unless you enjoy the slow and gentle CO asphyxiation thing.

I don't know how psyched I'd be about hauling a 200-300lb RTT with a little i4 CRV (but honestly I haven't driven a CRV made in the last six years or so), and it looks like people do it.

I perceive the big advantage with RTTs to be fast setup, and sleeping high up off the ground. If you can't spring the $2k for a good quality RTT I'd say go for a good quality tent sold by MEC and buy yourself some nice sleeping pads. It's camping after all...

Yep those are them. I would use a small room heater and just set it inside the hatch, could run and not worry about it lighting me on fire in my sleep. Really like the RTT idea, may have to find a shop that has one setup to see how they work.

Real tent, on the ground, and good quality sleeping pads. That's the ticket if you don't want an RV.

The wife and I recently purchased a Treeline 2-3 person 4 season RTT. We love it. It gives us the freedom to go where we want and sets up in 10-15 minutes. We got ours with the optional annex which attaches to the tent to give us a extra room. Plus, they are made right here in Turner Valley. If you are into Overlanding or Boondocking, check them out.

That said, they are not great for vehicle aerodynamics, and I'm not too sure a CRV would be fun being blown around a highway on windy trips.

Edit: KRave auto has one set up in their showroom if you want to check them out.

... and how you powering that? It would smoke your battery in no time.

I like the RTT idea, except that if you’re also using that vehicle for traveling around while camping you’ll be having to tuck it away every day. And they’re so heavy you’re going to have it permanently up there even while just DDing. We ended up with a Jayco 8 footer TT and it’s great plus can leave all our camping stuff in there.

Also, I’m not sure ‘RTT on CRV’ can be called backcountry. That is 100% car camping!

I bought a queen size Coleman blow up for my tent last summer. Now that was camping!

Although I do think buying one of those roof conversion pop ups for the wrangler like what Grecy used for hai trip in Africa would be pretty cool. Any time you want HVAC just start up the Jeep.

I just have nowhere to store it.

My Yeti can power that, same one I used in my darkroom. Ended up ordering a hatch style one last night, should work proper. Nice thing about it is I can use it as a normal tent, or connect to the rear hatch. Either way it will work better than dragging my truck and trailer around.

I lived out of my RTT for 100+ days last year.

I've also done a hatch tent when I had a TDI wagon.

Hatch tent is pretty gimmicky - no real advantage to having access to the hatch of your car unless you need the hatch open to sleep inside it. They aren't expensive so maybe you'll find more benefit.

Hard bodied RTT is the only way to go - I wouldn't fuck with a fold out one. My JB deploys in ~30seconds and I keep all my bedding inside it. Plus it is more practical if you're sleeping at truckstops or in the city (I used it lots in LA). Downside is cost - $4400USD. You really have to evaluate how you want to use it and what your goals are - for most, sleeping platforms inside the vehicle or a conventional tent will work best. I wanted something that I could use in the city, back country and everywhere in between.

Haha, it might be around for a while since I’ll be firm on pricing. Still one of my favourite vehicles. I’m the second owner and I haven’t seen another original example in as good of shape.

RTTs are cool but extremely expensive, require a fair amount of work to mount up, add height and raise CoG. Necessary in Aussie where everything on the ground wants to kill you, optional for most other use cases.

A part of me always wanted to own a camper van and travel for month or 2 at a time. I love my VW's but I would buy the dodge or ford equivalent for 1/3 the cost and hope it doesn't break lol. Yours is in amazing shape, but seeing that the shit ones start at $7k, I can only imagine.
