RTTs are cool but extremely expensive, require a fair amount of work to mount up, add height and raise CoG. Necessary in Aussie where everything on the ground wants to kill you, optional for most other use cases.
They are more insta-worthy and definitely look cool on your social feed. Why do you think so many photos are taken looking out the door of tents? It's because "normal" tents themselves are now boring.

You realize you are talking to the guy who made his own furniture out of salad bowls right?

Hatch tents don't make sense to me because you are supposed to lock up your food in the car for bears.

Hah, Instalanders gotta do it for the 'gram! If I want to sleep off the ground, I use a hammock.

I like how what I call "car camping" is now "overlanding".

Truth, overlanding used to be super-built bombproof SUVs built for the Australian outback, nowadays it's "gatekeeping" to say the guy with a RTT slapped on his Impreza isn't really overlanding, wouldn't want hurt their feelings!

    What you really need

    Attachment 85959

    For sale too
    Hnghggggg

Zip, beautiful setup as always (and nice photos)

We have been using a hatch tent the last few years, and sleeping in the vehicle. Upsides, if it is cold you can close the hatch and keep warm in the car, and we can keep the dogs in the tent while we aren’t crowded in the car. Downside, it’s a pain to pack up at the end of the trip, and drying it out at home sucks.

We are looking at a trailer setup due to the number of dogs we have (3-5 depending on the in-laws travel schedule), which is a significant price increase. Going from a tent of any kind to a dedicated camping setup is a 5 figure consideration (because awd vans hate to tow).

Tent trailer will keep you easily under 10k.. It's a huge improvement from tenting, and easy to tow as light weight

True, if you have a vehicle to put said tent on, and remove easily

    Tent Trailer, not a RTT.

Tent trailers are kind of in a sweet spot for easy towing and low price. You can get a pretty decent one for around five grand, and pull it with a minivan or small SUV no problem. Don't buy brand new.

They don't have the huge sail area of tradition travel trailers, so less wind-induced away, and less problem with headwinds. Usually have two queen beds. I'm a big fan.

Yup, i got my 2003 jayco 8-footer for like $2500. Has been great. Tacoma is major overkill for towing it, hardly even notice a change in gas useage and have taken it to the island and back

There is a slight annoyance with setting it up where a full hard side, but i can also set it up and still have a fully functional vehicle by itself. The RTT or camper van really struggles with this, and say i want to go fish and wife wants to go for a run, she wouldn't have a camper to go back to once she's done.

The alcoves are key for when it’s raining.

Saw one of these on an Xterra on the weekend. Group of spec hipsters, I swear I even saw a giant bag of avocados on the picnic table.

What I thought was funny was buddy had the cheapest Chinese rims and bald street tires on the thing. It wasn’t overlanding anywhere.

What is the main benefit of the roof top tent for places where ground predators (thinking snakes etc.) aren’t a concern?

Seems like a lot of hassle and I couldn’t imagine trying to get into that thing drunk (how I camp). Also last time I looked they were pretty damn expensive.
