Default Mid-grade gas - do you?

Mid-grade gas - why does it exists, who uses it and how much of it is really sold? I've been driving for over 40 years now and have never filled up with mid-grade gasoline. I also, to the best I can recall, have never seen anyone filling up with mid-grade gasoline.

That all noted, do any of you regularly use mid-grade gasoline? Are station owners required to offer it as part of their agreement with the brands they represent? It is pretty much available at every service station but my understanding is that there really is no such thing as manufactured mid-grade gasoline and that it is just a blend of regular and premium gasolines performed by the pump itself.
    Will fuck off, again.

I feel like my FJ cruiser recommended 89?

It’s certainly an uncommon fuel to recommend.

It’s just 87 and 91 blended together anyways.

I feel like a lot of outboard marine motors used to recommend it. Then again, why wouldn't it just be sold near the water and marked...
    I've never used it.
I full on refuse to buy any sort of premium fuel at the major refinery gas stations since they decided that it should be 20¢ more per liter. Costco is only 10¢ more and off-brand chains like Canadian Tire are somewhere near +15¢. V-POWER can V-BlowMe.

Yeah, it used to be a 12c difference for V-power when I bought my first turbo car, which I didn't mind, but 20c is ridiculous.

I’ve never used it. It’s 87 for the company car, Shell 91 for the Corvette and CO-OP diesel for the truck.

Regular gas works best for regular cars, while premium gas works best for turbo cars... I've never understood why somebody would use mid-grade.
    High compression N/A?

Ultimately it just depends on what fuel specs the engine was designed for.

I might use it if I have a car tuned for 87 here in Calgary, and am on a road trip in a lower altitude, but probably not because I fucking hate ethanol.

I don't even know of a car designed to run specifically on mid grade fuel, many have guidelines that allow for it, but the manufacturer recommendation is for premium
They are increasingly rare, but they do exist.

Chrysler recommends 89 for all 5.7 Hemis but also notes 87 is OK as the computer will pull timing as necessary.

Just in certain parts of AB (including Calgary), I've yet to find ethanol free regular in BC.

About 10 years ago (not really that long ago), retail stations actually had mid-grade underground storage tanks...

I would think it's a marketing option adding the button/option at the pump as a means to sell the premium (91) gasoline to general customers.
... To those who know what they want, really its no difference. No i've never filled up with it though.

I thought all regular will have ethanol to a degree. Only ethanol free gas is premium.

I think their Regina refinery, that explodes every few years, has some sort of exemption to needing to add corn piss into their gasoline.

Its not an exemption, they still mix the government mandated amount of ethanol, they just sell that stuff to other gas stations.
