Interesting timing for this to come out as everyone is discussing airline costs and profits.

Sorry it was a result of weather. Compensation has been declined.

That's the real kicker, how much onus is on the airline to prove it wasn't their fault?

At least it's good to know they got caught and it's not that easy to hide it.

    Yea thats too bad.

Decade ago this was common place with AirCanada and WJ was there it seems to pickup good PR (eg. reduced cost flights to the 'closed' destination to affected Pax).

    Those days are long gone.

So when do the airlines start actually putting carryon bags in the little tester in front of the gate? Amazes me the size of bags being carried on now to avoid paying $20, that are clearly over the limit

They do it in Europe. They also charge for carry on there haha.

I’ve seen AC do it here and there, mostly packed flights, but they usually waive the fee at the gate.

I'd like to see them crack down on the gender favoritism too. Women abuse the shit out of the carry on rules. You're allowed a "personal item" with you on top of your carry on, which should be like your ipad or whatever. But women can bring their carry on, then a "purse" that's the size of a carry on as well and call it their personal item.

I'd also like to see security staff armed with tazers zapping the shit out of anyone that approaches the baggage carousel before their bag is out.

The whole checked bag thing has backfired at WestJet. The last flight I was on, they offered to put your carry on into baggage for free because they were afraid that the overhead bins would be too full.

Pretty well every flight to vancouver or back now is full to the brim from what i've seen, and they're taking bags off the plane and gate-checking them. I am typically just carrying a messenger bag so it easily fits under the seat in front (ghetto, i know), but then i dont have to fight this crap.

This has been the case for every flight I've been on in the last 3 years.

Also the baggage tags are a disaster. They work differently at every airport, so somebody always has to help put them on. Good jorb everybody!

I haven't flown WJA in a while. The second last flight I had with them was full of interactions with miserable employees and the plane was falling apart.

The way it should be. Charge for carryon, no fees for checked bags. That would clear the cabin out pretty quickly.

Not to mention it would enable the airlines to make more money by having better utilization on the planes with quicker turn times. Boarding is the slowest process, bag loading especially on a containerized aircraft such as a 320 is super fast. Get more people to check bags, and the boarding will speed up exponentially. Maybe @KrisYYC can chime in here.

Yes the biggest detriment to on time performance these days is the carry on bag issue. Part of it is because of the fee for checked bags, and part of it is North American airlines are too generous with how much you're allowed to carry on, and are too lax at enforcing the rules they do have in place already.

I agree with 95eagleAWD, the policy should be reversed (free checked bags, charge for carry on for those without status or flying in the back) or go Euro style and limit carry on to ONE item only. The ramp crews can turn a full flight of checked bags in 30 mins easily, especially a containerized 320/321. Not dealing with 15 cabin bags coming off the bridge right before departure time on every full domestic flight would speed it up for sure. Operationally it would be better, but the revenue from checked bag fees is significant and I'm not sure if the improved OTP would outweigh that
