    Default Mercury Disposal in Calgary

    Hey folks,

I am doing some work out at my farm and the crew found a 5 gallon drum of mercury in one of the structures I was tearing down. It’s contained in a 5 gallon drum. Too much mercury for city to take. How and where the fuck do I get rid of it?

Call a fire department. They should know how to dispose of toxic waste like that.

on a related note, what's the proper way to dispose of old thermostats that have a small amount of mercury in them?

Mercury thermometers. Safely dispose thermometers for free at a household hazardous waste drop-off location: Designated fire hall. City landfill Throw 'n' Go area

Just google up hazardous waste disposal. My family used to own a chain of photofinishing labs and had a huge amount of chemicals that needs to be processed for silver recovery and disposal. There's a decent # of companies that can handle it at a cost.

Yeah, I just added to mine but I don't need no 5 gallons. It would be cool though.

I heard of one person who put an ad up on Craigslist, story here https://www.pca.state.mn.us/living-g...pounds-mercury

5 gallons would be over 600 pounds, nuts.
    Will fuck off, again.

You would be surprised. I know most of the abatement and reclamation guys in the city, none of them wanted to touch that amount of mercury. Aevitas out of Edmonton was the only ones willing to do it and it'll end up costing me about $65/kg to dispose

    Thanks all.

I know nothing about mercury but based on what speedog says and your quote, it costed you nearly $18k? Yikes!

5 Imperial gallons of mercury is just over 678 pounds which equates to just over $20,000 to dispose of properly.

Put your thinking caps on, boys, and help this guy out. By the way, it's not illegal to own mercury and it's way cooler than nickel.

I've got about 3 pounds of the stuff and it just sits as a curiosity item on a shelf in the living room. It's in a small bottle and doesn't get removed from the bottle but just handling the bottle of mercury is pretty cool.
