I wouldn't be surprised to see them supplementing for short commuting (think already downtown) but I can't see them replace longer-distance commuters, or those who are in it for the exercise. Additionally I can't see them being used in the winter, which I know some people still ride during that time of the year.

Uber has the e-scooters for use in Austin, and it's way better than a rent e-bike. Easier to get around, easier to use, not nearly as intimidating for non-regular users. Those go up to 13mph. Would not purchase one for personal use, as I'd rather be Tour de France guy on said $8000 bike, but I would use it in lieu of Lime Bike or Car2go within downtown.

They were everywhere in San Antonio when I was there this past fall. At least 4 different companies including Lime (company who does the bikes here). Super convenient and fun to use

Would be interesting to see if the scooters would fly in downtown Calgary... imagine bunch of people in business casual wear cruising around on scooters

I would definitely use them, although it might be a bit crazy on Stephen ave / princes island on nice days

They are in tons of major cities and used by business people everywhere.

I’ve personally used them in Paris, Pheonix, and Kansas City.

Seems like a better alternative than those Lime bikes littering downtown for someone who needs to go a few blocks. I would definitely feel safer/more stable going 50km/h on my bike than 25km/h on one of those though, so the bike will remain as my preferred conveyance... Although I've been passed by someone going 30km/h+ on an electric longboard, so it might just be me.

Laws would need to change... those things aren't permitted on sidewalks in Calgary.

Neither are bikes, but I think a lot of people ride those Lime bikes on the sidewalk without issues. Not sure the laws will help or hinder this.

The bikes are different as they are technically electric assist.

E-scooter is not new, just not in Calgary. Was scooter even a thing in Calgary?

I know these are popular in San Diego and when I was in Seattle and Portland last year I saw a lot of people renting these. I wanted to try one out until I saw the price, then my cheapness took over and I walked instead haha

The problem with Lime and Bird are that what their charge is very similar to Car2Go and I get heat in winter with C2G.

I also don't have to ruin my hair with helmet.

If I'm a tourist, I would love these services to tour a city as I have done Segway tours all over the world. These would be even simpler. I love e-scooters when I was in San Fran last year. I was also riding electric scooter in 1999 in San Fran bombing down Lombard and blew a stop sign. Not long after, they banned them.

Do people wear helmets on rental bikes and scooters?

No but you don't see cops ticket them.

You see them on riding on sidewalk too. I would feel much safer on the road if they don't speed limit them to 20km/h or something stupid.

Good idea for kids to ride that to school! (not sure if school allow .. but it is better than crazy traffic jam every morning..)

Haha just saw the clarification of e-scooter. Aren’t they banned in most places because of exploding battery hazard?

My office is on the outskirts of downtown and I've been known to grab a Lime bike or two in my day purely out of convenience for getting across the core. I would 100% choose scooters over the bikes any day of the week if they were around.

Regardless, the MAMIL on the 8k bike is still gonna be riding his bike, as he’s doing it for exercise.. there’s a reason he’s not riding an e bike.

I bike commute, and I’d probably go back to driving if The only choice was between driving or scootering

    They’re already everywhere in Europe.
Jump on a train, fold it up, get off at stop, finish commute. Repeat.
    Very convenient.
