I haven't ridden one yet but to my knowledge they don't have bells or horns, which seems odd when a bicycle requires a bell to be legal. IMO the scooters should be treated exactly like bikes, bike lanes or side of the road only. But I also hate (most) bikers on the road, so I am probably never going to be happy there
most the bikers dont follow the rules either, there's just no winning.

By sound, i think they should have some sort of audible indicator that is just on by default, not a bell or anything, just a constant noise so you can hear them coming, like a quiet ping or buzz or something that's not really annoying but enough that you know they're there.

They do have a bell/horn on them. But not very loud.

The problem is that they charged per min so there is more incentive to go fast and endanger pedestrians.

How are people so irresponsible with these things? It's not rocket science... slow down when on a narrow sidewalk or around people, cruise when its clear. Is it younger kids being so dumb with them or is it adults?

LOL all these do is just bring out the irresponsible in the irresponsible already.

Wouldn't matter if they are walking, driving, biking ... they would still suck.

Slowing down = more time, more time = more $.

Charge per min model encourages going fast.

Pretty much, shitty people are shitty regardless. Majority of people are respectful but it only takes a small percent of numbnuts to ruin the fun for everybody.

Same reason gravel trucks drive like assholes. Get paid per delivery not per hour.

Do these scooters have enough juice to go up a big hill like centre street or does it just eat up battery? Wonder how these'll fare in winter. The pathways actually get plowed with lots of efficiency after snowfalls.

Why I always opt for the MB car2go over the smart. Might be a little more per minute... but less minutes total

also, walking is free, so if people are using these its typically because its a faster mode of transportation to get wherever they need to go

Program shuts down between Nov and Mar.

If we get 30 injuries a week now, it's going to be crazy when it's cold and wet.

Most new scooters have the ability to go faster than 25 just by using a firmware update. Anything that is greater than 250 watts can actually be pretty damn zippy, but also illegal in most places. Its actually quite amazing the speeds you can get off two dozen properly cooled 18650 lithium cells. Lithium cells that cost about $2 to $3 each and usually last for a couple thousand recharges. Electrical cost to recharge a scooter in Calgary: 2 cents.

I can imagine that thirty six Tesla 2170's should be adequate to get a scooter up to highway speeds - although the sanity of doing such a thing would be questionable.

Took a lime scooter to an appt yesterday at lunch, and took a bird scooter back to the office. I liked the lime one more, as I enjoyed having the speedo, and the rear brake worked better (does Bird even have a rear brake?). Also, I'm way more aware of how people just somehow take up as much of the sidewalk as they can while walking downtown, and how much nicer I am to riders than I thought I was.

Not bad, gotta get used to the brakes since they’re not really progressive imho. I usually just let it freewheel down and apply the brakes on/off a couple times.

From what I have been seeing, most people using these scooters should be walking or running instead.

its probably good for them, if they didn't have the scooter they'd probably just take their car... this is just a way to avoid having to pay for parking in 2 places.
