Default I made a big dog house

Once I found out I'm gonna be a dad 3 months ago, I thought "why not get 2 dogs to make sure I have no time for the foreseeable future?". So I did. Found em on kijiji, they're a mix of Great Pyrenees, and bernese mountain dog. Yea, they're gonna be big. They're brother and sister from a litter of 11.

For the first month I kenneled them in my heated garage, then I built the dog house over 2 days.

    The boy (Chewy)

Both of em. The girl is Oreo, black and white.

Used 2x2s to make it a little lighter.

Painters drop sheet to wrap it, keep the moisture out.

1.5 inch insulation. Worked great with the 2x2 wood since the wood is really only about 1.5” thick.

    Floor insulated

For interior and exterior walls, I didn’t want plywood because a) it’s heavy, and b) it’s ugly. I found, only at Lowes, something called “Metrie” 1/4 x 8 x 4-ft. It $10 per sheet.

    Insulation started.

Insulation wrapped to keep moisture out.

    Exterior walls done.

I made a divider to try and make a smaller room for the dogs to stay warm. And, I later put some carpet as a door for this barrier, plus a second carpet door to the outside. Both to help keep heat in and drafts out.

    Test dogs.

This is where things get janky. I don’t have fork lifts for my tractor so I did a mammoth tusk mod with long 6x4’s and some straps.

The destination. There’s already a caged in area which will be connected to the dog house door.

    So far so good.

Whoops. I used cardboard to prevent the straps from rubbing on the tractor blade, but I missed a spot and the strap was severed. No damage done.

Skidded the dog house the rest of the way.

Cut a hole in the metal fence to make a path into the dog house.

Testing the interior with 2 people and 2 dogs. No probems.

    Done.

    Final touches, sometime, will be:
    - A better ramp for when these bastards are over 100lbs.
    - Water resistant stain on the exterior. I have some around, so I'll do it soon.
    - Caulk the inside corners/seams for good measure.
    - A better door. The carpet is ghetto af.

Beautiful doghouse, and awesome janky tractor forks.

I woulda built it much less airtight, and I would have convinced myself that it was that way for some purpose.

Thanks. less airtight would be good for the summer, so there's a good reason. I put a wireless temp sensor inside. For now until winter, I've cracked the roof 1" to prevent them from overheating and also to let out humidity.

Having the roof on a hinge is genius too. Makes for easy cleaning.

    Awesome dog house!

How did you secure the insulation to the roof frame? Glue? Or screwed the frame into the insulation?

Congrats on all the new and future additions. Dog house looks good. Will they sleep outside then?

For now it’s just squeezed in. Tight fit to hold it.

Yes. For over a month they’ve been sleeping in the dog house. I put them in the outdoor kennel + dog housewhen I’m away so they’re not eaten by a cougar. When they’re grown, they can roam all the time but I’ll have electric collars on them to keep them in a large parimeter.
