Shit I'd better check mine. I only have one but still.
Draws 100w, not charging, nothing plugged in. I’m guessing it’s constantly working the battery to extend its life. I typically replace battery every 5-7 years which is way better than modern UPS’s.

These are old ass UPS’s, vintage 10-15 years old, clearly not designed to be efficient but works awesome in brownouts and power outages.

And they're cheap protection as well and for the cost of 100W of electricity, they're still worth it.l
    Will fuck off, again.

I have one, and I obviously bought it for a reason, but I've always struggled to quantify the value. How many incidents of damage can be directly attributed to power issues?

Brownouts used to be the biggest issue when it comes to damage but modern electronics are designed to work over a larger range of voltages, so it can handle brownouts much better than vintage equipment.

I don't have UPS's for damage protection, otherwise I would've spec'd much smaller units. My UPS's are there to keep shit running for extended periods of time when there are power problems. The power's been really reliable the last 5 or so years, this was the first year I noticed the UPS's actually kicking in when we had a large # of spikes and brownouts during one of the big storms.

Is this a "new" neighbourhood thing? I can't even rememberremember the last time power was out at my house for longer than 5 minutes.

Yea, when I first moved in (2001) I would have 2-3 power outages a year. I'd say I'm down to 1 power outage every 5 years now. Brownouts are the bigger problem, there are light ones that I barely even notice, but can hear the UPS kicking in through the house.

So my anecdotal evidence of 1, yes it's a new neighborhood problem haha.

We average 339 kwh over the last 4 months.
2 adults, 1600 sq ft bungalow, all LED lights, AC.

I run my fan 24/7 in the summer (recommendation from my A/C installer) ...
Why is that recommended? Just curious.

915 kWh between Apr 25 and May 26 at $0.064162/kWh (ATCO variable)... peaks at around 1100 kWh in the winter and lows of just under 600 kWh if we are on vacation.
House is 2-storey around 2100 sq.ft. plus basement. 2 adults 1 kid. 90% LED lights, electric water heater and a/c. I don't like wasting power. I imagine if I don't turn off lights that other people leave on, it would be another 300 kWh.

i have an original furnace (including fan) from 1989, so its very inefficient and can't be controlled from the thermostat like modern units. The way it's controlled is there is some sort of device that sits on the furnace flame (the name escapes me now), so when the furnace fires up it heats the device which triggers the fan to run.

With AC, there wouldn't be any heat to trigger it to turn on, so instead of installing a relay to trigger it during the call for a/c, easier to just have it running all the time via the manual switch. The other drawback with a relay that turns it on during a/c is that there would be constant on/off, which on an old fan like mine actually is worse for power usage (big power spike to rev up the motor from standstill). On modern units they are much more efficient so they can handle consistent on/off.

All that said, running a fan 24/7 just evens out the temperature throughout the zone. So even if I didn't have a/c, it would help to keep the air moving and consistent temps across all rooms in the zone.

Yup. I posted some before and after data of me running fan 24/7 here: https://forums.beyond.ca/threads/410...04#post4790204

Basement temps equalized much closer to the other floors.

Also recommended in super efficient "tight houses" to keep humidity from condensing in the windows in winter.

I have one of those "tight houses" which needs to hrv and fan to be on 24/7.

Swapped the new Mars ECM in and have the continuous speed tap hooked up.
Now I'm running 85watts continuous instead of 615watts. Much quieter now and I'm hoping to see similar temp equalization as before. Calculating at least $45 savings a month.

Yup, bumping an old thread. Working at home seems to give me more time to look at data.

    2 years of data.

Real electricity costs are $0.17 per kWh. Some day, I might go back and add the RR values.
    Gas averages $10 per GJ.

    Data is broken out here:

Man I should do this. I've been putting it off, but we run fan 24/7

271 kWh last month. With tenants in the suite.
House built in 1958. Dryers are electric and so are the ovens.

Update: Moved to a house built in the 60's this past summer. Similar sized home, 3 people, no baseboard heaters, A/C and a gas heater in the garage:

How do we know if our house qualifies? This sounds like some nice savings.

Monthly electricity use at my house is a lot higher than most of you. Right around 1000 kwh/mo. Guess the furnace fan is 400w (I think?), so that's 288 kwh/mo. the Mars 10860 would save a bunch, since it would run much lower wattage on "fan only".

Although, the electricity cost is $0.0579, so it'll take a long time to pay back. Unless those other fees are also variable with usage, I can't tell from my enmax bill if that's the case or not.
