anyone have a good source in Canada for those Mars motors? They used to be readily available on Amazon but haven't been in stock for a while:

Although, the electricity cost is $0.0579, so it'll take a long time to pay back. Unless those other fees are also variable with usage, I can't tell from my enmax bill if that's the case or not.
Look at my spreadsheet. They are all variable except the admin charge (charged daily flat fee). Real cost is $0.15 to $0.17 per kWh.

Wow, I'm amazed at some of the electricity usage in this thread. I've become much more aware of my own electricity consumption and we do our best to reduce/minimize usage. In Spain they offer different rate set-ups and we've chosen one where we have 8-hours a day at $0.09/kWh and the other 16-hours at $0.19/kWh (electricity here is definitely expensive compared to Alberta but it's also a much greener energy mix).

We're just a couple in a 1B1B apartment but even when working from home 24/7 we're still under 150kWh per month.

Nah, our energy is green now. JT got us a carbon tax.

Lots of good info going on here. As I'll be moving into my own house I'll be looking at ways of keeping a lot of costs down and some good stuff in here.

We have the same spreadsheet. Can confirm. Variable and fixed fees screw us all.

Also @ExtraSlow , you AV cost/day is actually lower than mine?!
I'm at $2.28/d and nowhere near your usage.

Furnaces use electricity. As extraslow said, just the furnace fan running fulltime is almost 300kw a month.

I must be failing at this. $6.23 avg/d. This was before F@H. I am on fixed 0.0549/kWh.

I'm not an HVAC expert but 300kWh sounds very high unless you're heating a 5000 sq. foot house or have a very old furnace. I don't think modern ECMs use nearly that much, even in the coldest months. If there's a furnace expert around to chime in that would be great.

A completely geeky site I like to check out here is this Real-Time Electricity Demand and Generation Mix: https://demanda.ree.es/visiona/peninsula/demanda/total

I'm not sure if there is anything similar in Alberta, but there should be!

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to ExtraSlow again.

Very cool, thanks (although I wish it had pretty graphs to make it more readable).

UPS battery backups are massive energy users. I have 6 of them throughout the house and it’s responsible for 30% of my usage. I bought a power meter and measured usage of things around the house. That’s with all the equipment off behind it.

Still worth it to protect the equipment.

Seriously? Why are they using so much power once the batteries are charged?

That's what I thought too haha. I have no idea why they're so bad. Maybe newer UPS's are better? Mine are the old beefy APC SmartUPS 1500 units. I just kept them from back in the day and fresh battery every couple of years.
