I always found the hose attached spray on 4L liquid lawn fertilizer kicked ass (I think it was Scott's or CIL). One of the first summers I used one I got a phone call mid spray so I set the jug down on the steps aimed at the lawn, though it couldn't cover the whole thing. Got carried away on the phone for ~10-15 mins. Went back out and tried to spray the spots that weren't soaking for extra long but it was too late. Within a week you could blatantly see the fat cat grass vs the peasants, mowing that part was such a pain, it was almost too damn thick. It was a real life side-by-side comparison, I was sold on that ever since. The trade off is manually watering for ~20+ mins, grab a beer and pick a chill evening, it's peaceful.

Been doing it at my current house since I built it in 2010, thick dark green grass.

    Must be magic soil
I think you may be right, on my street everyone has green lawns but my neighbor waters and fertilizes waaay more than I do. Actually come to think of it I've never fertilized my lawn.

    It must be magic soil.

I killed my whole front yard with roundup in April. Then brought in six truck loads of dirt. My wife and neighbors thought I was crazy. I wasn't going to embarrass myself and fuck up the project, so I did a youtube/forums crash course on lawn care that might've fallen into the category of OCD.

But 2 months later it's starting to pay off. We've already had a few weeks of 30 plus degree weather here and a lot of lawns have gone brown and dormant.

Your 10 year old, juiced up lawn better watch out 89coupe

But seriously, enough lawn flexing lol. OP, for easy results and if you don't want to fuck around around with soil sampling: cut lower and bag clippings on September 1st, aerate with two passes. Overseed, then water 3 times a day.

If you want to take it a little further do your soil sampling, bring in some sand/dirt to level your lawn, seed with a high quality Kentucky Bluegrass mix (I'm seeding this fall with T2 Premium blend https://www.brettyoung.ca/profession...d/stock-blends), spray some weed pre-emergent safe for seeding https://www.seedworldusa.com/product...city-herbicide and fertilize with Scott's starter fertilizer. You'll take magicsoil to the next level.

Took a pic of the fertilizer I use. I use a small hand held spreader set on low.

What do one of those soil test kits go for and do they give you recommendations for how to treat?

I see some Canadians like using Waypoint https://www.waypointanalytical.com/HomeOwners I've read it costs about $24 CAD for the testing and about $20 for shipping costs. They will give you recommendations on how to improve soil and guidelines ie. how many lbs/1000sq.ft to use.

I had lush green lawn last year from over seeding, additional soil, fertilize and lots of water. Had many dead patches after winter. I was thinking watering too much last year didn't help the roots grow deep enough? I'm cutting down to watering once a week to see what happens. Lucky we're getting lots of rain lately but I agree the lawn just need good general maintenance.

It's funny since my lawn started looking awesomely green, both neighbors beside me are trying super hard to make theirs better but just can't keep up LOL, spending money on those professional lawn treatment didn't help either and ended up fertilizing themselves.

Started using an electric dethatcher/scarifier this Spring, not as good as raking by hand but lawn still turned out great thank goodness, hated hand raking since I was born.

How often are you watering typically, and what time of day?

Depends on the weather, if it’s hot and dry I keep my grass longer to protect it from the sun, and water probably once a week for a good hour, weather dependent. I only water after I cut it, and only if it’s hot and dry. I haven’t watered my grass for the last couple weeks because of all the rain. I always fertilize after I cut my grass. Usually cut my grass in the evening when the sun is lower in the sky. I don’t cut my grass really short, I find if you keep it longer it stays healthier.

Scotts ez seed works wonders. It’s expensive but worth it, especially if you aren’t super diligent and miss watering. It’s very forgiving

So I'm doing the 89coupe method, using Scotts Green Max. The stuff works like magic. Not sure if I will be applying after every cut though, thats alot of $$ to spend on fertilizer.

Have a few spots that need repair as the developer was doing some sidewalk repair. Used Ez Seed thanks to the recommendation in this thread, will post back re result.

Any suggestions re managing clover infestation (3 leaf clover)? I have it in patches throughout. Ugh. Have read that nitrogen should help, the fertilizer I'm using packs a ton of nitrogen so am hoping for some improvement but its like rampant.

Broadleaf herbicide kills clover. So, regular weednfeed probably

You definitely do not need to be fertilizing every cut for a perfect looking lawn. Coupe did that but he also had brown spots in the photo he posted, possibly caused by too much fertilizer.

My parents have a yard that they enter in competitions and has been featured in magazines and they fertilize the lawn once a year. Good soil, aeration, and not cutting it golf-green-short etc. is plenty. You don't need to fertilize every cut, that is a total waste of money.

I've used the EZ Seed on a couple spots where our sod didn't take 100% (it works awesome)... once that gets filled in I'm posting pictures to put 89coupes overgrown weeds to shame.

Also I think I was cutting our lawn too short, popped up the lawnmower 1 notch which should help as well.
