Default What is wrong with my lawn

Just doesn’t seem to want to grow, with plenty of water. It wraps around from SW to NW facing, and all sides look pretty equivalent and just not healthy. House is pretty new so the landscaping would be newish as well. Just doesn’t want to grow?!

Help? Make Brent a mid-cut off the fairway!

    Fertilize? Aerate?

How much do you know about your soil? Aerating and then top dressing is the way to go, but you may want to add soil amendments too.

How often and for how long do you water?

Zero idea about soil. Moved in December, so first summer with it. Have been doing 2-3 times a week up to 30 min trying to motivate it. Have only mowed twice this year

Get a soil test kit. Then get an appropriate fertilizer.

Twice a week is plenty for an established lawn. Test soil then make a plan.

    - set cut height to max
    - maybe add some extra top soil into your spreader (along with fertilizer, etc.)
    - try reseeding at same time

I fertilize and water after every cut, I also let it grow a good 5” between cuts to keep it super healthy.

I use Scott’s Turf builder Pro.

    Just cut my lawn now.

Scott's Turf Builder MAX. They advertise a greener and healthier lawn after 3 days and i was surprised to see it was actually the case for me.

Besides that, aerate and dethatching/power raking early in spring helps too. I think it would still be good to do even this point in the season considering your lawn isnt very thick

Jesus you shouldn't have to fertilize after every cut. Figure out your soil first, then aerate and top dress with some soil amendments. Once a year fertilizer is plenty.

Our lawn looked like that when we first bought our house just under 2 years ago. Last summer we got someone to do the aeration/power rake / fertilizer / seeding and it showed some improvements

This year we did the same, except we did the seeding ourselves with Turf Builder Grass Seed we bought last year from costco end of season sale and the lawn seems to be doing quite a bit better. The only thing is the lawn is still quite uneven..

PS. I know NOTHING about lawn care...

I would throw some nitrogen at it for now. With the heat of summer coming soon I wouldn’t do anything too drastic. In the meantime send off your soil for testing. I just received my testing results back.

Then you can make a plan for some repairs after the summer heat. That may include aerating, overseeding or soil ammendments.
I redid my lawn this spring over two months

I’m going to do one more fertilizer application, spray some weeds irrigate 1.5 inches of water per week (deep waterings in the morning) then leave it until September. Once the heat rolls off I’m planning on aerating, levelling, seeding and buying some weed preemergent from the States.

Fuck that, every cut, I go through a whole bag every year. My grass is thick and dark green.

But the key is water, can’t expect your grass to be lush, green and healthy without plenty of water.

Don’t fertilize every cut lol. Every 4-6 weeks for synthetic fertilizers. Also cut often, avoid cutting more than 1/3 of the grass blade. Cut at max height over the summer and mulch your clippings into the lawn. Water deep and infrequent, this will promote deep root growth. 1.5” water per week is what experts recommend.

I fertilize once a year and have the best lawn on the block. All comes down to soil quality and enough water at the end of the day.

Haha, of course good soil, and how do you maintain good soil?

Been doing it at my current house since I built it in 2010, thick dark green grass.

    Must be magic soil

So now we've seen the "before", but I'd like to see the "after" shots of 89coupe's post-weekly fertilizing...

You maintain good soil by doing what's been suggested several times in this thread, sending a sample to a lab. I just spread 30lbs of gypsum soil conditioner on my front yard, as recommended by the technician, to reduce sodium, increase calcium and loosen the soil. A sample is pretty easy, not too expensive and might save you money in the long run as opposed to just throwing a bunch of fertilizer at it.
