Lots of engine failures on 08+ WRXes and STis. Plus you can get those WRXes under 10 grand. If he has his heart set on one I'd fine a cheaper one, since the engine will be a crapshoot anyway.

That is spitting distance from an sti.

That said, keep in mind that Subaru’s can be a nightmare if the previous owners werent religious on maintenance.

So it's got a new turbo? What happened to the old one and what's the story with that? Who did the work? He's asking a premium.

Old one probably fragged and sent all its bearing material through the engine. That car's a timebomb with rod bearing failure waiting on the other end.

This car does not seem like a good deal at all and it's also a notoriously bad year for that engine with bearing failures.

Looks overpriced, and he very likely knows full well about engine issues and is trying to dodge the bullet by passing it onto someone else.

Show him this thread and ask if he's willing to put another 6 or 9k in it down the road a bit.

Are cracked oil pickups common on these failures? I am contemplating replacing this on my wife’s ‘08 wrx to have its time of death, my decision alone.

Yeah most common issues with oiling are:
Oil pickup cracking (it's brazed together, KillerB makes a good steel one)
Oil pump cover screws backing out and blowing out the front seal
Rod knock (usually due to not checking oil and letting it get too low)

And they also like to eat pistons, but usually only if it's been modified with no tune/a bad tune.

Lancers are probably the worst car on this planet.

Quality, fit and finish, price, features... really all you get is a warranty you'll mile out before you time it out.

I would suggest installing an oil pressure gauge with audible alarm like the speedhut gauges. Its MUCH less pain to install a gauge. Getting the oil pan off is a fairly big PITA vs oil pressure gauge. Cheaper too.
If the pickup is cracked you'll see noticeable drop in pressure. The gauge is also good peace of mind for low pressure, oil pump failure, and other things. IMO all cars should have real oil pressure gauges or at least proper sensors and not just useless low pressure switches like Subaru installs.

Not sure why but most Lancer cars that I see I get the idea that they are made out of paper.
