Had it for a year. We didn't go often and when we do, we spend way too much in there. Used it for car rental discounts as well. We realized we don't use the membership very much so we let it expire when my parents moved near by in the neighborhood and we'd go with them.

Balzac has the self checkout now. Any other locations?

I didn't see it at East Hills when I was there last week.

    Minor bump.
I got my Capital One Costco rebate last week. Does everyone get them at the same time so Costco will be a hoard zoo?
Or, are they spread out depending on when you got your membership or credit card?

They also give you cash back if you don't use up the entire rebate.

The credit card one comes at the same time for everyone. I have $871.XX to spend today. I only get ~$80 a year for the executive membership.

Costco is the epitome of NA consumerism. Makes me sick watching people leave the store so happy with all their over purchases.
I go maybe once a quarter and with a list. Don't deviate from the list and I have actually gotten out of there with a <$180 total.

Their tire service is pretty awesome too if you buy the tires from them. Patching, re-balancing, rotations all free for the life of the tire.
Pretty sure UrbanX has this same policy and bought all my tires from Bob.

Costco is pretty gross consumerism. People buy too much of things they don't need. And absolutely nobody saves money by having a Costco membership.

This is a pretty blanket statement that isn't correct.

I save a lot of money by having a Costco membership as I buy fruits, vegetables and meat weekly for substantially less money than what I would pay at Save on Foods or Safeway.

I think people are fooling themselves about the economics of the situation. Because most people think they are smart and can't be fooled by simple retail psychology tricks.

Except Bob can't help you if you have a tire problem outside of Calgary. Don't get me wrong, I use Urban for all my tire needs as well, but having a warranty that is useable in any town that has the business in it can be fairly handy.

While I agree there are a bunch of people that delude themselves into thinking they are really saving money.. There are ways to do it. Like someone said earlier, having a list and sticking to it is one way. Buying expensive items with an executive membership, warrenty, etc..

Honestly I'm a bit perplex how people consistently overspend at Costco. How often do you need 26 packages of whatever before you become a hoarder?!

The fact that Costco breaks even on selling goods, and their profits are almost exactly equal to what they take in in membership fees (last I checked), says there is definitely a case for Costco saving you money. If the savings are over what you spend on the membership, you are winning.

That said, doesn’t cure people spending money on suit they don’t need.

    not true at all.

Let's divide costco purchases into two types: discretionary and non-discretionary. If your argument is that people buy discretionary items at Costco because it's there and they do a good job merchandising, that's true, but not particularly interesting as people fuck up discretionary spending all the time.

But, if you buy the non-discretionary items at Costco, then you save a shit ton. You really only need to avoid buying the large-package perishable items that you won't use before they go bad. Otherwise, things are way cheaper there, and almost always better quality.

You buy non-perishable items a year at a time: ziploc bags, garbage bags, razors, dishwasher detergent, paper towel, etc.

This is also one of the big reasons why I purchase tires from Costco. There's that piece of mind if my tire blows up during a road trip, Costco will have my back.

I have a simple method of shopping at Costco. Only buy things that are listed on sale at cocowest
