Right, a year at a time for non-perishable items is savvy budgeting and not overspending. One does not simply buy a year's worth of toothpaste of Colgate and then later impulse-buy Arm and Hammer!

I went away from the "good deal" toothpaste. Fucking 250ML tube of colgate is a pain in teh arse, and also not allowed in your carry-on. I buy the 100ml tube at the dollar store, and it takes up less room in the drawer, doesn't get so weirdly floppy, and if I am travelling, I can take the same stuff.

I save a lot of money by having a Costco membership as I buy fruits, vegetables and meat weekly for substantially less money than what I would pay at Save on Foods or Safeway.

The thing is, Save-on Foods and Safeway are probably the most expensive places to buy fruits/produce
I find Costco is pretty expensive sometimes compared to many places. It's worth a flyer check if you are doing a run weekly.

he starts a new thread every week called something like "Costco West week of Feb 10, 2020" or similar. He goes through the entire store and takes pictures of every sale item then posts them in the thread.

It's actually pretty handy if you have the time to go through it but be careful to not fall into the trap of thinking you need it just cuz its on sale lol.

I usually check it the day before i'm making my monthly trip to costco to see if there's anything else i should grab at the same time.

Don't be afraid of overbuying. With the awesome return policy, you can go in with a buy now think later attitude. As long as you keep the product unopened to be fair to them.

You are probably right about them being the 2 most expensive grocery stores but I live in Skyview Ranch. I can either travel 15 min south to the Castleridge Safeway or 15 min west to the Panorama Save on Foods which is why i listed those. The Sobeys on Country Hills Blvd is terrible for fresh produce as everything is always ripe or about to spoil and both Super Stores in Castleridge and Coventry Hills are picked over by the end of the work day and even busier than Costco.

Anyhow I drove 7 minutes north of my house to Costco last night and I bought a bag of bananas, a 10lb bag of apples, a bag of 6 heads of lettuce for, a bag of mini cucumbers, box of tomatoes, 10lb bag of oranges, 10lb bag of lemons and 2.5 dozen organic eggs.

I dont have the receipt handy but when I get home I will update my post with prices and I will look at the Walmart flyer as I assume that they would have the cheapest prices? Personally I would not go out of my way to drive to Airdrie or Deerfoot City to buy my groceries at Walmart but I will price compare to see what the difference is.

The other thing that I keep in mind besides convenience is that I buy the same 10 - 13 items every week so at Costco I don't have the price fluctuations of is it on sale or not and truth be told I am not going to drive an extra 10 minutes to save $10 on my grocery bill as I would probably spend an extra $3 in fuel anyways in addition to the time.

I shop at Superstore/No Frills quite often as I find the prices there quite reasonable regularly. It's like the balance between Walmart (shit) and Safeway (nice but expensive).
Costco is good but many times you will find better deals if you follow flyers/collect PC points.

I bought the following at Costco last weekend:

6lb bag of royal gala apples $6.79
10lb bag of carrots - $10
2lb box of Roma Tomato - $5.49
5lb bag of lemons - $8.99
6 romain lettuce hearts - $6
2.5 dozen organic brown eggs - $10.99
bananas bunch 3lbs - $1.99

Total=$50.25 (minus whatever my executive membership and costco capital one card refund me at the end of the year) * I get an additional 6 eggs but 1 less lb of lemons over Super Store *


I went off the Superstore online grocery order website (not that I would shop here as it is out of my way but I assume its one of the cheapest priced stores):

6lb Gala apples - $12.96
10 lbs carrots - $9.96
2lb Roma Tomatoe - $5.96
6 lb bag of lemons - $9.96
6 romain lettuce hearts $5.98
2 dozen organic brown eggs - $12.96
banana bunch 3lbs - $1.98

Total = $59.76 * I have 6 less eggs but 1lb more of lemons than Costco *

Those are staple items that I buy every 8 days so my grocery bill could be higher or maybe a bit lower depending on the sale of the week.
