I gotta ask: Why not Cuba? This guy i know bought a condo in Cuba and he loves it there. I think he paid $12,000 Cdn for a unit and it's about 10 to 15 minute walk to the beach if that. If you're on a fixed income you can live a nice lifestyle there.

They are getting tired of the long flight there, and also want to be at a place that they'll see my family more often than once per winter (i.e. a place I could take my wife and kid for a long weekend, Hawaii obvi doesn't fit that bill).
Calgary to Hawaii is 7 hours. Calgary to Cuba is 16 (with layover)

My initial instinct was San Diego before I even read your whole post. Palm Springs is a fucking snooze-fest, if they want to get older a lot faster buy there lol

Every time I have flown to Cuba it's been direct and under 6 hours.

    I wouldn't want a place there though.

Ah, at a glance I didn't see any direct flights. I assumed they all went through Toronto.

^What community is that? Just curious.

The Vegas suggestion is interesting. I still think San Diego is the closest to filling all criteria, it's a matter of finding the right suburb. Close 2nd would be Texas, as it's a little less desert-ey.

Not sure on the flight status, but South Carolina would be nice
I can vouch for that. However there are no direct flights. United connects through Houston, Denver or Chicago. Delta through Minneapolis or Atlanta. American through Dallas. Our place is about 2 hours inland and 3 hours to Hilton Head.

    Why?
Higher population or illegal immigrants or new immigrants. The results in poorer communities, and often a higher crime rate, especially when comparing to other retirement cities listed.

Many people in this thread cannot or did not read haha.

Here's my thoughts on the list of possibilities:

San Diego - probably has the best climate of all the choices as its very temperate year round and has direct flights. Not sure how tight they are with their budget as both properties and taxes are relatively expensive. I figure if they could afford on Big Island, they can afford San Diego
Vegas - desert climate also and can get quite cold in the winters (snow on occasions). On the plus side its an entertainment hub and tons of restaurants and buffets. Quick and easy flights to visit on a long weekend. I do find that people drive like maniacs here as the city tends to attract degenerates from across America although there's plenty of gated communities to pick from
Phoenix - most boring place I've ever visited. No garden for sure and the whole city is just a big gravel pit. Sedona on the other hand is about a 2 hr drive north of Arizona is amazing. It will be a bit cooler due to higher elevation and it's still a desert climate but if they're seriously considering Phoenix then Sedona is a way better option. It's kinda like the Banff of Phoenix where people go to relax for the weekend
Texas - direct flights to Houston & Austin now. Never been personally but no state tax and low cost of housing are favorable although property tax is relatively high

    San Diego is good.

The Pacific NW you had on your list is in my opinion wrong: rain rain rain. But if you insist, nobody mentioned Oregon. Mom would come back wearing Birkenstocks.

If your parents own a place in HI, and given the lifestyle you describe, I don't think that SoCal is out of reach - Orange County baby. Anywhere between Los Angeles and San Diego would fit the bill, even if inland by an hour or so. It would also give y'all flight options into LAX or SAN. Or even PSP.

Just remember, whoever tells you "we're close by" in SoCal is lying, they are at least 45 minutes away in no traffic.

I went to Decatur once. Not memorable, however I recall how cheap homes were. Perusing Zillow right now though, prices have gone up in the last 6 years quite a bit.

I would do Texas in a heartbeat! My wife's family are all Texan's and every time we go we want to stay. Austin is an amazing place!
