Default Why Did I Get Fired - Inspired By Maxt

Spinning off the Costco thread, why did you get fired? I'll start:

Shortly after high school I bullshitted my way into a job as the maintenance guy at a small local hotel in my hometown which was laughable because I could barely fix a sandwich! Thankfully I had a phone in my "shop" space (this was before cellphones essentially) so I could phone my Dad in the middle of my shift and ask him how to fix things. I lasted about a month before they figured out I didn't know anything and TBH I'm surprised it took that long.

When I was 16 or so, a buddy of mine and I got hired onto a landscaping company. We knew these 2 girls on the same crew and in typical fashion for us, we would banter back and forth, always trying to 1 up each other with the insults in boys VS girl fashion.

The last joke I told was to one of the girls and said something like "it's a good thing you are built like a gorilla and have long arms so you could crawl out of the abortion bucket" (horrible I know) She punched my shoulder, we all laughed, and carried on.

Anyways, did I forget to mention that her dad was the landscaping company owner? Well, he overheard that, and while we were all family friends and shit, he pulled me aside and said that the joke crossed a line and came pretty close to being true, and it upset him a lot.

    Was a long walk home.

City of Calgary golf courses. Not really fired, but kinda pushed out (basically they were making it a hassle to re-apply at the beginning of the season, saying they lost my application blah blah). I was already working full time and was just on-call at that point for 1-2 weekend shifts a month so i didn't really care and didn't bother pursuing it.

Reason: they caught on to me that I wasn't cracking open the cans of beers for customers.

I got fired when I was 18 from a job because I went to a Finger Eleven concert at a nightclub in Red Deer instead of going to work. Best friend told me I wouldn't get fired because it would be 'unreasonable to do so' hahahahahahahaha

The time that I was supposed to start rolls around, my phone starts ringing immediately. It's my boss. I'm pretty wasted at this point. He called a few times before I finally answered. I was fired right there, over the phone. I hang up and tell my friend I just got fired. He says, "Really? Oh well." And we carried on drinking. lol

Another time earlier that same year, I was 'fired' by my supervisor at a maintenance job for a summer village. I say 'fired' because he couldn't really make that call but whatever. I had worked the whole summer and my term was just a few days away from being complete when things went totally sideways. I had got a phone call from the payroll people claiming that my hours were being adjusted. I asked my supervisor about it and he totally blew up on me. Turned into a massive screaming match between me and him. It was basically one of those "YOU'RE FIRED!" "YOU CAN"T FIRE ME! I QUIT!" arguments.

I ran into him a few weeks after and he apologized and everything. But it turned out he had actually been stealing materials from the summer village and he himself got fired for that lol.

I don't really know if it was political or not, but working at a small O&G company (~200 office workers) that was constantly on the verge of bankruptcy, I was the only person laid off. I still got a decent severance however.
I also worked as a phone support for a small software company, where they gave me no training other than pointing me at the help file and telling me to teach myself. Being that I had very little context of the industry, I didn't learn fast enough, and after 6 months, was let go, being told I wasn't a proper fit. Again, I don't think it was a real "firing".

Only been fired once in my life. 18 y/o, friend worked at a mom and pops video store, I have a love for movies, friend suggested I work there so why not work there to kill some time during my first year of University? Some of my friends would come and visit and check out the video games (they had a 3DO there). 3 weeks into this job, they called me in and told me one of the other employees ratted me out for having my friends visit and play games there which wasn't allowed. OK no big deal. They also did an inventory of video games and turns out tons of NES games got stolen, the guy that ratted me out said my friends were in the back as well. Fired me on the spot.

The funny thing about it was that my friends and I already had every single NES game out there, we all had the little disk drive pirating machine. Shortly after that, I borrowed $500 from @ScCab , put an ad in the Computer Paper, and started Beyond by selling computers out of the back of my car. Turned out OK. If I ever meet that guy that ratted me out again, I want to thank him haha.

That’s when you double down and tell him that it’s obvious that his sense of humor got left behind when he crawled from the same bucket.

I got fired from Dairy Queen for forgetting to close the freezer once. The manager who fired me was later fired, and I assume arrested, for stealing a soft serve ice cream machine and keeping it in her house

I got fired from the Safeway deli for my first job ever when I first started high school. No one ever trained me and I basically had to figure out what was going on. At the end of the probation period they said I wasn't doing a good job and let me on my way.

I'll own up to it though. It was just a deli job so maybe I should have been able to fill in the gaps haha.

Back in early 2012, I was back in London. Two people tried to break into my neighbours house. I was in my bedroom applying for jobs and I saw two guys trying to kick my neighbours backdoor. I called the police and gave them a live commentary on what was happening. The burglers moved to the front of the house and they were violently trying to kick the front door of my neighbours home.
Police arrived and arrested them. I gave a full statement and said I was asked if I would give evidence in court. I was advised it may be 1st week of June, but I would get a telephone call of the court date the day before. I agreed.

I applied for a job at a bank I wont name (but its origin is tied with money laundering and the opium trade back in the 17th century Hong Kong)
It was a meet and greet position, I was unemployed for a year so I was applying for anything and I was dead broke. After a online application, online test, telephone interview, I had a actual interview for minimum wage job.
I worked out of a branch in Edgeware road. I got the full training that was pretty good. The manager was a bitch and the supervisor a cunt. I told them about my court issue to give evidence. They said no problem. I was there for two weeks.
One day I left home 1h 45min early hours to get into work. Due to multiple delays on the tube it took me 2 hours. I got in 15mins late and the supervisor just ate my head.
It was such horrible place to work and management showed no leadership skills.

Anyhoo, I got a call one day on the way home that the trial was the next day. I called my manager and the training manager called me back. I explained the situation. I was giving evidence in court and I had explained this. She said that was my choice.
The next day I was waiting outside the court to give evidence and I got a phonecall from HR. I had been fired. There was nothing I could do legally as I had been employed for less than 3 months.

It was so humiliating. But on the plus side, I got some crucial training on banking. When I immigrated to Canada end of 2012, that training proved crucial in my job in credit and investing. I still use it for my current role insurance today.

I'd still let you handle my meat. Been fired once. 21 years old, concrete finishers freaked out on our pump operator, nice big brawl started between our crew and the finishers. Good old hirise 'struction. Alot of guys got let go that night. This happened at 10th and 4th. Old gateway midtown site.

working at blockbuster video, flabbergasted how easily it was to steal their dvds, inadvertently posted a how-to-tutorial , by using a small magnet to slide the case locks up and open the dvd, giving access to the goods - onto one of the largest internet message boards at the time.

I was not trying to teach people how to steal, but rather just like "oh shit look at this".

two days later on my tuesday shift after the weekend, they had blockbuster corporate, an LPO and a cop on site, I thought when i walked in "oh no we got robbed", nope they were waiting for me with printouts of my thread from that message forum.

Someone on the forum ratted me out, and I got fired in fantastical fashion by being escorted out by management, lpo and a cop.

Lol, only fired I remember, a mcjob manufacturing job a few years ago. Cost me a finger due to lack of safeties and a machine that cycled uncommanded.

They put me in shipping/receiving after, but demanded I talk to a salesman to confirm what to ship. The salesman wouldn't answer when asked. Told to ship ontime and complete, but that was never possible - there were always delayed products on orders. The major account I would ship 30-40 boxes a day.

    Wait till complete it's late.
    Ship incomplete and it's incomplete.
Get direction from salesman who doesn't want to answer.
Oh and no more than 1000lbs shipout per day or we get dinged on shipping.

No matter what I did it was wrong. Everytime the salesman did answer it created issues with the shipout weight per day. It was one giant clusterfuck.

ok, so I have a couple; lets start with the oldest.....was 15 and working at mcdonalds, they put me on the drivethru window. they had their favourite staff that would always win the prizes in-store for the staff. had another staff member tip me off on how to use the debit receipts that people didn't want (wait a couple of orders, stick the receipt in the till and take out the cash) to make money out of the till. that lasted 6 months until they finally figured it out and fired me on the spot. thankfully they never figured out where the bags of mcflurry toppings were going, they helped make wicked homemade mcflurry's for almost 2 years after haha.

got fired from mopac for sending the stupid bitch of a receiver up in Edmonton a half eaten piece of pizza in a puropack. and they made me pay the postage on it before firing me haha, but it was totally worth it. such a fucked up place to work back in the day. haven't been back since.

i never said that they deserved it; i was a young punk kid with no idea of how the real world worked. today is such a different scenario; not only do i have myself to look after, but i also have a kid and a fiancée, a mortgage, etc. i am not proud of the fact that i was a little asshole, i am not the same person today, and i only posted this as more of a lookback as to how stupid i was when i was a teenager. not to mention how much the world has changed in the last 19 years.

    Oh oh - I'll play! I got a gooder.

So I got out of college and started working as a designer/assembler for a sign shop. 6 months later I got a call from a guy I knew from the old days off BBSing. (If you don't know what this is, don't worry - it isn't really relevant.) This guy was a weirdo, but we get along reasonably ok in spite of that and so when this guy offered me a position as the lead web designer at his "Multi million dollar company", I accepted. Turns out the office he showed me was simply the office that was financing his company, and in fact it was just him and me in a little corner office. That's fine... gotta start somewhere. Eventually though, his financers grew wise to his weirdness, and we were kicked to the curb.

Luckily, the company who's website we were in the middle of developing took us in and became our new backing. I worked there for 6 months until one morning I walked into the office any my computer was in pieces. I then went to speak to the owner of the parent company as he was the only one who was in that early and he sat me down and was quite angry with me. Said I didn't know "how to work" and that I was "watching porn all day". This was all very odd since I worked my ass off and even back then would NEVER consider watching porn on the net at work. Heck - it was all paid back then anyway and I had no money for that shit! He tapped a large folder with like an inch and a half of paper "evidence", but refused to let me see it. I was let go. This all made zero sense to me,but my gut told me this guy who hired me initially had something to do with it, and our brief conversations afterward all but confirmed it. He had me ousted. Not sure why, but it turns out this guy was literally a sociopath - originally diagnosed (incorrectly) as Asberger's. To this day I have no idea what drove him to do this, but I can only assume he wanted to revel in trying to ruin my life.

Lol what. This makes no sense at all. If you didn't get caught doing this within days you must have had some real stupid management.

actually when you think about it the plan is brilliant. easy to understand why it took them so long to figure out. we honestly didn't have the brightest managers lol. the receipts weren't a red flag, because a lot of people order a meal and that's it. the till would still balance (debit receipts plus cash still equaled what it should have), and the fact that they were pretty lax about changing out tills from morning until close allowed everything to work for as long as it did. i'm sure they spent a little while figuring out what i did, i had an inkling that they had found me out the week before, but they didn't have enough to do anything that week. the next week i came in and was taken straight into the managers office. let go on the spot.
