In my personal experience, my family was good friends my Sergei Makarov back when he played and lived here and he was hands down one of the nicest people I've ever met. I can say the same about German Titov, who still lives here and is good family friends with my sister. Very nice and down to earth, like his whole family. I've met a few other Russian NHL players but briefly, can't say I've heard anything bad about them or superstars like Ovie and Malkin, who are rumoured to be very nice guys as well. Not sure where this "most Russian players are complete douchebags who care just about money and fame" is coming from other than an anecdote from some washed-up unknown who probably felt outclassed emasculated by the handsome talented Russians.

Of course there are good Russian's too. Pavel Bure was super flashy with his cash, but was still a pretty nice guy that would take time to greet his fans after games on the road. As a general rule of thumb, Russian's have tended to be more about the money than other nationalities, but i am sure that has changed in the last 10 years.

It's probably worse these days with the younger players, remember they can retire comfortably in Russia after just a few NHL seasons, or keep playing in the KHL for fun and pocket money. I have no doubt that money is the main motivator for all of them, followed by fame for some and many of them are douchebags as well. But they also endure changing countries and languages for what they see as a job, so some of the perceptions probably come from cultural differences more than anything. Oddly enough, many of them are aware of the bullying in the system and come anyway, or send their kids in some cases. The bullying and abuse in the Canadian/American system is well publicized in Russian propaganda.

That is just the thing though, if it is still purely about money than they are way more likely to just stay in Russia and play in the K. The NHL really only appeals as a means to live a western life and/or play in the best hockey league in the world.

I'm unable to get NBC Hockey but is Roenick still off the air? It's been a month!
Searching for news stories, all I was able to find was stories of him apologizing two weeks ago.
He should be embarrassed for apologizing and his co-hosts should be embarrassed for not sticking up for him.
