I view these signs as the opposite of helicopter parenting - they are for lazy parents who think they can toss out a sign and not have to watch their kids or teach them about the dangers of a road. Why parent your kids when you can buy a sign from Costco? A helicopter parent I feel like would be out there in a lawn chair shaking a fist at every vehicle going over 5 km/h.

I appreciate the signs as a driver. The last thing I want is to hit some kid. I couldn't live with myself if I killed one. kid chasing a basketball out onto the street is a perfect example that I have seen first hand.

Come on people, where else can children play? Only if we have some designated areas for children to play in. Even better, we'll put up signs too to tell people to slow down, what a great idea.

Every neighborhood has kids playing all over the place, the signs are redundant in that respect. You wanna see these every 3 houses? It's like the parents that expect you to drive extra cautiously around them because they have a 'baby on board' sign, good grief.

I'm from Airdrie where it's been 30 for years....I don't see the big deal about these signs, if the limit is 50 go 50, run the signs if you want too, lol, that's their problem if you didn't see it, tell them to claim the costs under their home insurance and see what they say.

A house up the street from me has a "Handicapped parking Sign" on a temp support in front of her house.

Are those legal ?? I get that there is probably a reason for the sign but shouldn't the city be adding those.

Are they allowed with a permit ?
They are available from the city if you are actually handicapped... or whatever the new feel good term is for that.

Long story short Trio of Helicopter Moms have put out the lovely Slow Down signs about 8 ft from their houses (they live on a bend so it isn't in the middle of the road as 8 ft would imply but still a nuisance). What is the legality behind this? I'm having trouble finding the bylaws with respect to signage on roads etc etc.

Is it really that big a deal.. no. Have the helicopter moms been absolutely a nightmare.. yes.
Pics of the helicopter moms please.

For optimal effectiveness, removal is recommended when children are finished so figure is only visible during playtime.
    Those kids are so dead.

I'm a fan of these new signs because for too many years, the signs have been discriminatory in singling out the "slow" children that are at play in the community.

Why did we always need to paint a fresh sign to tell everyone "there's a retard in the neighborhood"? What a hateful time we lived in!
I can only assume that nowadays we've started adopting a more inclusive signage system that simultaneously identifies each individual as xXxTremely Special & Unique while gently placing them into a favorable category (although not too generic) in the name of safety.
The fact that it's a misshapen green blob with a hole in its head is a subtle reminder - an homage, if you will - to the historical lineage of the "hey - don't mow down the local Tard" signs of the past. It reminds us how far we've come and provides reassurance that we are the most progressive peoples. (Although NOT superior).

It helps people identify which neighbors to never invite to parties.
