Question How much did you spend on a engagement ring?

Heading towards that next milestone in life...but not sure what the norm is for spending on an engagement ring. I've only ever heard of the 3 months salary rule but think that's just successful marketing. Curious what other people spent as I don't really have any married people in my life to ask (except family).

3 months pre-tax salary, so realistically 5-6 months of paychecks.

    <$4k for the set.

My wife actually was the one that suggested I look at moissanite rather than a diamond. Saved a significant amount of money this way.

I don't think there is a hard rule on this at all

Depends on what you and your future wife value. Some people think getting a 20K ring is worth while, others think it is a total waste of cash that could be used elsewhere (like a honeymoon or as a downpayment on a house).

I don't see a strong correlation between how much people spend on a ring and their income anymore
100% Agree with this, my gf likes fancy things, but as we've been shopping around it's more about what she likes and not necessarily how much it is. Some girls tend to fixate on the cost, not what they like as we all know. So far the ones she has been pointing out have been the cheaper ones, could be luck. Hey I won't complain haha. We'd both rather have the extra money for something else anyways.

If your gal is the type who wants you to spend 3 months salary on jewelry, keep in mind her tastes won't get less expensive as you go through life.

My wife is as cheap as I am. I spent maybe 7% of my gross income on her engagement ring, and I'm happy with that level. It's a nice ring, still looks good, suits her hand size, and isn't flashy enough to get kidnapped over.

    Stay frugal my friends.

Agree. Really depends on you and your gf.

If you guys hang out with people who like nice things (designer bags) and will probably wield a 1carat+ diamond when they get married then that's your norm right there and expect to spend $10K+. Otherwise don't spend too much... and obviously don't spend more than you can afford regardless.

I guess that's a good barometer right there. If you meet friends for drinks, woukd your wife notice immediately if her friend got a new designer handbag? Mine wouldn't.

Honestly. Just ask her what she wants.

Keep in mind the entire value of diamonds is essentially propped up by marketing, it’s just the nature of the game.

Yes, there's as much inherent value in diamonds as there is in purses or collectable beanie babies.

LOL mine will kill me if I spend any large amounts of money on an engagement ring!

I'm sure it will be laughed at but I intent to stay under $1000 for the set.. Would like to say even lower than maybe $600-700.

Go for lab-made, they are literally identical to the heavily monopolized "mined" diamonds, only cheaper and more perfect.

It's difficult to think of a larger waste of money than a giant ring that you then have to pay to insure, but it's rarely up to us

I did not spend much as that’s not her style at all but I’m sorry those man made ‘diamonds’ are silly. Might as well get a cubic zirconium

3 month salary is definitely out of date and just successful marketing as OP pointed out.
The only 'rule' I go by is spend what you're comfortable with.

I would suggest avoiding lab grown until prices settle. 60%+ drop in wholesale prices year over year and the trend will continue.

Maybe we aren't talking about the same thing - they are literally a diamond, made with the same process (accelerated) as a mined diamond is made, and identical to a mined diamond in terms of composition. From everything I have read, the atomic structure and chemical composition is the same. Both are nothing more than carbon after a lot of heat/pressure. The only difference is that it's price hasn't been artificially inflated by the DeBeers monopoly. Sounds like prices are on the decline for those as well which is great.

A Cubic Zirconium is not a diamond at all, but 99% of people would never know the difference I suspect.
