There's definitely alot of ego and stacking up to others when it comes to buying rings. Fortunately, my dad's a jeweler so we just went through the family stash and custom made the ring she wanted. I never had to worry about price since I'd be paying cost for whatever the wife decided she wanted but she's also very down to earth. #savings

My family tries to extend this courtesy to friends getting married or have kids getting married. Some opt to get it through a store, whether it's for warranty or other purposes. Maybe they feel like it's more "legit" coming from a storefront or are not comfortable with paying half of what it might cost at Spence because it seems "cheap."

This is the exact mentality that De Beers is preying on and marketing to differentiate between lab grown and mined by tanking lab grown prices. People are stupid haha.

I heard from an American talk show that pawn shops can be a gold mine for used diamond rings although it sounds even worse than what I described haha.

    "Where'd you get the ring?"

    "Quik Cash"

If you can get it cheap enough. Melt it down. Repurpose it and be that low cost baller.

You've probably been telling her it's 12" for years so why not bump this up too?
Like a girl I knew would say. I have no concept of measurement, guys have been telling me that 5 inches is 8 my whole life.

Probably the best advice here. The diamond is the real part that matters, and that can easily be removed from a setting. Cheap used diamond, coupled with a new band, and you can tell her it's a custom ring now.

I guess depend on size ...

I mean, not the size of the diamond, but the size of your fiancé ....

    This a thousand-fold.

My wife proposed to me. Bought me a nice white gold ring with a few small diamonds. I only ever bought her a wedding ring. Plain, not over the top. After a few years of being married my mother gave my wife a few of her cherished pieces of jewellery, the first necklace she ever bought and several rings which included her engagement rings which fit perfectly and she still wears to this day, some 20+ years now. I understand the symbolism of rings, but to me, and luckily my wife, most things are just trinkets. Life is too short and precious to always want to be trying to impress others with shiat, being rings or cars or houses or trips etc etc. I look around this city and see so many victims of slick marketing machines. Being a lot older then most folks here I've also met so many people over the years that were on that treadmill of consumer retail therapy that in the end just self destruct, its sad. To each their own I guess.

3 month salary is definitely out of date and just successful marketing as OP pointed out.
The only 'rule' I go by is spend what you're comfortable with.

I would suggest avoiding lab grown until prices settle. 60%+ drop in wholesale prices year over year and the trend will continue.
Good, honest advice from someone in the biz. Respect.

Cars are bad investments, watches are bad investments...... if she's happy with what she's got, it's worth it as long as you can afford it imo.

Depends on the age you bought the ring too.

Pretty sure it's after tax and expenses.

So if I spend more than my after tax income, then she gets to pay for it.
